Disagree. At least this has real office, multitasking and a file system

At $650 in 6-8 months.... Just like all those other useless snapdragon devices that were $12-1500 now selling for less than half.

I am, $650-$700 anymore than that these are overpriced, the only reason this one is even above $1K is because of the OLED and SXE.The surface laptop used-like new was already around the $600 mark."https://slickdeals.net/f/18289045-microsoft-surface-laptop-2024-13-8-touchscreen-display-snapdragon-x-elite-12-core-16gb-ram-1tb-ssd-storage-platinum-614-used-like-new?src=SiteSearch"
OLED isn't a plus on these models.
I deliberately returned my OLED for the LCD version because the OLED has the worst white point colors and screen door effect you'll see.
The screen door effect makes it feel like you have spider sacs crawling on your eyes. It was unbearable for me.

I dont disagree, but thats something people instantly associate with quality and look for so its what increases the price.

In most cases, no...because the Snapdragon (Arm-based, like smartphone cpus) cpu is not 100% compatible with regular x64 Intel/AMD cpu PCs!!
Even simple games and apps like some vpn or Fortnite WON'T install.
MicroCrap has played everyone trying the Windows on Arm cpu systems since the 2019 Surface Pro X with the SQ1 cpu, then SQ2, then Surface Pro 9 model, and now Surface Pro 11. EVERY ONE of these have had software incompatibilities and device driver issues!
Many schools refuse to support SnapX systems, and professors will likely make you run software that won't work on the SP11.
Even working in IT for years and having used everything, I'd even trade a free SP11 for a Mac even! The incompatibilities are that bad.
Be smart!
Surface Pro 10 with the Intel CPU or Surface Pro 9 with the InteCPU are the Surface Pros to look at buying for college.
....
If you're a cheap or poor student, Ebay for the SP6 or 7 8gb 256gb models $100 to $300 used. Microsoft releases a new SP yearly, so they depreciate in value like mad!
Yeah, Fortnite is SOOOOO important when you go to college!

I remember LTT bragging about the battery life on snapdragons and how they support up to 6,000 completely random apps. Ironic how that went, for any generic app that isn't Microsoft office. Does not work or has support on snapdragon. I used to work for a large hosting company, and people complained about Windows CE not working with Java.

Nice paperweight.

Odd question. Any computer is good for college depending upon what you will use it for.
There are definitely some computers that lend themselves better to college life than others. Personally, I'd want a super lightweight computer with the longest possible battery life. Last time I was in school, I got the 2014 Macbook Air. It was the absolute best for taking to class and never having to worry about charging it. I imagine that'd still be the best option for most people at its (base configuration) price point.

While this is a great product, it is too limited with the X-elite CHIP.
Software that may not work or require adjustments:
  • Printer and peripheral drivers:
Some printer and hardware drivers might not be readily available or compatible with ARM architecture, leading to issues.
  • VPN clients:
Certain VPN applications, particularly those with custom drivers, might not function correctly.
  • Anti-cheat software:
Games with anti-cheat measures that rely on custom drivers or hardware-level checks may experience compatibility problems.
  • Creative and scientific applications:
Applications that depend on specific hardware APIs (like AVX2) that are not fully implemented on ARM might not work as expected.
  • Virtualization software:
VirtualBox, for example, might not function optimally or require adjustments.
  • Game Anti-cheat Software:
Some game anti-cheat software may not be compatible due to driver or hardware-level incompatibilities.
  • Google Drive:
Some shell extensions used by Google Drive may not work.
  • Adobe Audition:
This specific application might have issues due to its dependency on specific hardware instructions.
  • Specific CAD software:
Applications like AutoCAD might not run optimally due to their reliance on x86 architecture.
  • Certain games:
Some games may not run at all or require significant performance adjustments.
Factors influencing compatibility:
  • ARM architecture:
    .Opens in new tab
Snapdragon X Elite laptops use ARM architecture, which is different from the x86 architecture used in most traditional PCs.
  • Driver support:
    .Opens in new tab
The availability of native ARM drivers for specific hardware and peripherals is still being developed.
  • Emulation:
    .Opens in new tab
Windows on ARM uses emulation to run x86-based software, which can introduce performance issues or incompatibilities.

Personally, I like to game once ever few months, I have multiple emulators, multiple games that were designed for X86 and not ARM. I would rather get a $500 chromebook/tablet with a OLED screen.

Do you expect all your engineering software to run on ARM? with every addon that was made for the software to work? ARE YOU SHITTING ME? Nobody is worried about Fortnite... it is the point.
And Fortnite has over 650 million registered players. I guess 650 MILLION USERS for a software is not a large enough group to make it work. AND IF 650 million USERS IS NOT ENOUGH THEN IMHO, THE ELITE CHIP SUCKS and is not compatible with too many pieces of software.

Quick question: How do we know that a model has a 5G version? A 5G version means cellular connectivity, right?

Almost none of them are 5G, and I've yet to see a 5G Surface Pro 11 posted on slickdeals. You would probably have to go through a vendor that mostly supports businesses.

Long battery life? I was in the library studying half the time and they had plugs. And all engineering needed a PC, not a mac.
I remember having over 200GB in MP3s that we all shared. Learning how to download using IRC. And playing pc games and having s_x.

The real issue is they should have been very aggressive with pricing even possibly taking a lost on the CPU's to get their foot in the door. Selling them at Mac level pricing was a disaster.

They may be better with battery and fans but if I can get a Intel/AMD that gives 90-95 percent of what Snapdragon gives with full compatibility then it's no brainer.

Yeah, it is a bummer. I've been looking for a 5G version and it seems like the deals are way harder to find than with some of the old LTE ones.

I don't 100% NEED 5G, but I've gotten really used to having LTE on my Surface Pro X. But now the SPX is getting a bit long in the tooth and being limited to just LTE networks is occasionally a problem.

Surprised they've dialed back the number of 5G models so much--I thought that was a pretty easy feature to add if you were already using the ARM processor as it was built into most of the chipsets.
