You can get a proper quality one without the old school floating ball for <$10 at Home Depot... I wouldn't get this POS just to save $5

that's the old style with the ball.
The newer tech no longer has the ball.

wonder how the new one is better than the ball?

I have been buying the new style every year for the same toilet for the past three years. I'm not sure the newer style is better.

I bought a fluid master kit for $15 at Menards. That thing is really nice. Once I got it setup and properly adjusted, that bish fills the tub up so fast and is really quiet. The toilet is pretty much ready to go before I'm even done washing my hands.

Get the "longer lasting" one. I never thought that I would have repaired so many toilets, but I've had to replace that thing in every toilet in every house I've lived in at least once. Spend a little more.

This landlord will not be buying that kit. Fill valves are cheap. Paying someone to install them is not. We buy the best one we can find.

which "newer" style do you speak of? the fluidmaster is newer than the float style, but quite proven and pretty much as good as you will ever get. especially the brass shank "pro" model. but even the run of the mill fluidmasters will beat out anything with a ball float.

now, the newer korky style ones? those are petty bad. they are real quiet but fail very quickly. pretty much only get those if you have some sort of special low profile tank that requires one.

Pretty funny people calling this a "landlord special" when what they're really trying to say is slumlord special. But a slumlord won't bother replacing a broken toilet flusher. They'd make you reach in the back and pull the chain manually for 10 years first.
Cheap isn't always bad. Expensive isn't always good. Newer isn't always better. Spend 5 minutes of your life reading reviews and decide if spending another $5 or $20 is worth it or if the cheapest is actually the best... It's rare, but sometimes this is the case.
neat. but in this case, cheap is bad and a newer fluidmaster style is better.

as a landlord who is his own maintenance man that doesnt like to have to go back for repairs anymore often than i have to... i wouldnt install this unless i was in a pinch and it was the only thing i had laying around.

if i was a homeowner on a serious budget, id get this knowing that i might have to replace it, and that replacement wouldnt be all that inconvenient. but if i needed to save $12, id probably do it elsewhere in life.

Yeah I'm unconvinced the Fluidmaster style is better. Most of my life I was maybe fixing a toilet once per decade. Now its every 2-3 years with that style.
