Your fingernail is about .5mm thick for reference. Yes these hold water and wipe sand off easily. But they're nothing amazing and easily need a thicker towel or cover up. They are extremely lightweight too, so 8x weight is still nothing. If you've done and detail work with microfiber there is a major difference between thin and thicker quality microfiber.

These towels are thin but incredibly absorptive(sp?). These things are incredibly handy for when you may need a towel but have minimal space. I don't even need towels, but I'm buying four of these because well, they're that good. I may even replace my day-to-day shower towels with these
Do NOT use fabric softener or dryer sheets with these. Then they become crappy sheets of thin fabric. So as correction, do not use fabric softener or dryer sheets with these towels unless you want a thin crappy piece of fabric. You're welcome.
