ALL Insta360 cameras overheat really fast when at max resolution. During the summer this one will shut down due to thermal overload in 2-3 minutes. The X3 did the same for me. The X2 did the same for me. Even the new X5 does the same! You can only use max resolution without fear of thermal shutdown if it is literally snowing outside and you're moving pretty fast to increase wind chill and aid in cooling of the camera's surface. You basically are stuck using medium resolution or medium-low resolution if you don't want it to randomly shut off due to thermal overload all the time. I kept trying to give them the benefit of the doubt and get the newer one each time thinking to myself "they have to have fixed the overheating problem with the new generation" but I was sorely mistaken every single time from the X2 all the way to the X5. Check all the reviews, YouTube, and any other review site and you'll see LOTS of people sharing my same experience with all the Insta360 models.

90day return window for those of you who bought it late last year like me.

No return/rebuy

I bought mine 3/25/25. Costco website says "For members other than resellers, purchases that reduce in price within 30 days of the date of purchase are eligible for a price adjustment. Products that have promotional item limits will be eligible up to the limit quantity." Did you call a rep for the return ?

How does it compare with Hero 13 bundle at Costco for $320?
Technically different uses. Although, this is arguably more versatile. GoPro is more convenient size-wise and editing wise. I would research the differences between a 360 camera and an action camera.

The camera gets hot way too fast. I tried using mine a few months ago outside. It shut down fast because of the heat. It was on a tripod in the back yard during a bee hive check. Keep that in mind. I wanted to do a 24 hour time laps but it would never make it in the spring, summer or fall in Mississippi ...

DJI Osmo Pocket 3 would be way more useful for the average user.

Is this a good product if my dad is looking for something simple to take pictures with and doesn't want to use his phone with a selfie stick?

This is not simple, you need to use an app to reframe and export videos.

DJI Action 4 would be simple and good photo quality.

Shutdown in 2-3 minites? Really? I just got back from Hawaii and used an X4 at full res and definitely used it for more than 5 minutes at a time and it never gave me any issues or shutdown. Sure it got hot but it NEVER shut down in 2-3 minutes!

For your dad, I recommend the DJI Osmo Pocket 3. It's much simpler. This requires post production edits with a high processing machine which complicates things if you're just looking for a simpler device for dad.

Depending on how tech savvy your dad is he may just get more value from a decent phone. I own the original Osmo Pocket and while it's wonderful with smooth stabilization it also requires more steps to get on my phone before I can share it with others, and it's more delicate so I'm always worrying I will break it. Phones these days take great pics and video; depending on his needs a decent phone may be better.

Any cases or ways to improve heat sink/dissipation people have found? I would usually only use mine for skiing or maybe brief video clips at sporting events or hiking so Ive never had it overheat.

I own the X3 as well as the pro 2. I've used the X3 pretty extensively from the Florida heat to "white out" blizzards on Mammoth Mountain, CA and just about everywhere in between. Although I can't speak to the X4, the only time the X3 has ever gotten more than just warm is when I have the screen on for a while. When I'm recording, I have the screen turned off and never have had an issue. Perhaps I'm just lucky, but this has been my experience on both X3's I've owned. The first one is on the bottom of the Gulf somewhere... 😞

How does this compare to the X5? I've read a bit but I can't decide if it's worth the $200 extra when Costco has it in stock.

Was not available anywhere nearby, had to travel 80+80 miles to score two. - 1 for myself and 1 for gift. I think its well worth the 3 hrs spent travelling.
