Dec and jan is still good imo. Less pretty fall foliage and busy during new year but probably the clearest weather months.

Usually i just go hiking and avoid temples and shrines.

How's the weather around that time? I want to avoid the snow or rainy season. I was thinking of mid to late September.

Just booked this for a fall trip! Been tracking LAX–Japan fares for a while and anything under $700 is a solid deal these days. Air Canada isn't the fanciest, but for $670 RT I'm not complaining. The layovers are manageable, and September–November is perfect weather in Osaka—less humid, great for sightseeing and food hunts. 😋
Heads up: some dates have long layovers in Vancouver or Toronto, so double-check the itinerary before booking. But if you've got flexibility, this is a steal.
Thanks OP!

Rain is May-July, Snow is Jan-March. Gets pretty cold at the end of November, but the sweet spots for Japan are March-May and September-November. This will vary only slightly regionally (earlier snow up north/in the mountains, more rain/much hotter on Southern Islands).

Agreed, this is when we travel to Asia to avoid the heat and crowds. We're doing it again this year, too.

November is the sweet spot!

My first time to Japan was mid November. Weather was great. On the cooler side, usually around 55-60*F which, to me, is absolutely perfect weather. Mostly overcast, some days sunny and some days cloudy but overall amazing. The last time I went was this past March, and honestly it was snowing pretty much everywhere in the Tohoku region, but it actually wasn't that cold and I absolutely enjoyed myself, being someone coming from socal where we don't get any snowfall without going up to the mountains.

I went in late November last year (through early December) and the weather was actually perfect. It was clear skies every day with weather in 60s to low 70s Fahrenheit. It didn't rain a single day and I went to Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Hakone, Lake Kawaguchiko. Plus the feeling of fall is beautiful. Do keep in mind that Kyoto is still pretty crowded with tourists, I think that's unavoidable at this point
