A lot of hate for pumice stones for toilet cleaning in here...
These work, especially if you have hard water. Acidic toilet bowl cleaners are the first line of attack but Zep 10% isn't even the highest acid cleaner on the shelf (see Lysol Power, especially from Costco). However, anyone who's dealt with hard water though will inevitably develop a stain that will not go away with acid alone.
Don't press so hard, you're trying to dislodge the stains, not sand down the substrate. Wet the stone so it isn't so abrasive. You will get good results; porcelain is a 7 on the mohs scale of hardness, pumice is a 6. You will crumble the stone before scratching the porcelain. Crazy how many people cause damage with these things... It shouldn't be the case
I generally advise against this. If you have difficult stains, try Barkeeper's Friend. It's very effective. That being said, I did use a pumice stone once in one of my apartments. I used EVERYTHING to get this gross ring to go away. Nothing worked. Finally, I relented and used a pumice stone. I got it wet and very gently scrubbed it away. I only applied it directly to the ring, no where else, and stopped as soon as it went away. It was like magic.
I was very gentle with it, and it didn't cause any perceptible damage to the porcelain. The toilet looked like new! So, while I generally advise against it, if you've tried everything else, and even Barkeeper's Friend or those caustic cleaners don't work, then this might do the trick! You can get some nice results with this, but please be gentle and judicious in your administration of this product!

My in-laws used a similar pumice toilet scrubber. Their toilets were scratched to heck--looked like truck stop johns. My wife brought one into the home, and I asserted my patriarchal dominance and immediately discarded it.

If you want to damage your toilet, this is how you do it.
Instead, buy something like Zep acidic toilet bowl cleaner, which is basically a 10% solution of hydrochloric acid which will actually remove stains. It's around $5-6 at Home Depot and works fairly well once you let it sit for a while.

Yeah Zep works pretty good. Here in central TX, the limestone/calcium really builds up in the toilet bowl. I'll shop vac the bowl and apply it directly. Works better if you scrub it every few minutes. Bought gallon last time.

One of these scratched my toilet really bad too, will never buy another one. My poop scrapes on the toilet bowl get into the little scratches and its hard to get it cleaned out

I was very gentle with it, and it didn't cause any perceptible damage to the porcelain. The toilet looked like new!
