The one, minor complaint I got from a friend who bought the Volume 1 pack was that while the AppleTV version has both original Japanese and English audio, it only has English subtitles, which was a bit of a bummer, since my friend wanted Japanese subtitles as a tool to learn (second language), and the significant other wanted Japanese subtitles (native language).

I would say Apple TV is preferable. They upgrade to the highest resolution for free when it becomes available.

I thought that was going away for most movies. Something to do with the studios (Disney, Warner Bros Discovery, etc) telling Apple to stop. Even if you buy it directly through Apple.
