Really depends on what you're doing with it. I think 9600x is great if you're not too crazy about fps, 9900x is at about $370 that doubles the amount of cores to allow heaiver productivity work. I would personally get a 9600x now to see if it can handle my use case, at this price point, you won't lose much if you decide to resale for an upgrade.
I originally purchased a 14600k and returned it to go with this 9600x instead. This is a really good bang for the buck, and you will see a huge performance improvement with either one Vs what you have now.
My parts are in a small form factor case, and the 14600k just runs way too hot to cool with limited CPU cooler choices (in my personal situation because of the case I own).
I would go for either of those, just depends on pricing/promo going on at the time (free game, or free ram, etc).
If you're using a 12 series intel, the motherboard you already own may be compatible with the 14600k- but also brings up the point that you could go with a 12600k for $149 and likely not have to change anything else out. That will also provide a great boost Vs the CPU you have now. I have one of those in the home theater pc upstairs and it's still very solid.
What are you primarily wanting to accomplish? Gaming is top priority, or something else?

Personally, I would just get 5700X3D it's just as fast as a 9600X in gaming. Keep your AM4 a bit longer and wait for the node shrink and core increase for 10K ryzen.
At $350 I'd probably save a bit more? Or just go with the most budget friendly AMD so you have more legroom to upgrade later.
What do you think about the AMD 8700G? I'm not planning to get a GPU, or maybe just a cheap one.
