Hey! I'm thinking about upgrading my PC (currently using an i3-12100). I heard the 13th, 14th, and Ultra Intel CPUs aren't really that great. What would you recommend right now that has good bang for the buck? I'm looking to spend around $350 total for the CPU and motherboard. Any suggestions?

Really depends on what you're doing with it. I think 9600x is great if you're not too crazy about fps, 9900x is at about $370 that doubles the amount of cores to allow heaiver productivity work. I would personally get a 9600x now to see if it can handle my use case, at this price point, you won't lose much if you decide to resale for an upgrade.

I originally purchased a 14600k and returned it to go with this 9600x instead. This is a really good bang for the buck, and you will see a huge performance improvement with either one Vs what you have now.

My parts are in a small form factor case, and the 14600k just runs way too hot to cool with limited CPU cooler choices (in my personal situation because of the case I own).

I would go for either of those, just depends on pricing/promo going on at the time (free game, or free ram, etc).

If you're using a 12 series intel, the motherboard you already own may be compatible with the 14600k- but also brings up the point that you could go with a 12600k for $149 and likely not have to change anything else out. That will also provide a great boost Vs the CPU you have now. I have one of those in the home theater pc upstairs and it's still very solid.

What are you primarily wanting to accomplish? Gaming is top priority, or something else?

Personally, I would just get 5700X3D it's just as fast as a 9600X in gaming. Keep your AM4 a bit longer and wait for the node shrink and core increase for 10K ryzen.

The responses you received are a bit all over the place. If you just do gaming, AMD is solid. If you do production heavy work, intel is solid. 14th line has some potential rare degredation issue, avoid it if you can, at least if you aren't savvy enough to mess with BIOS stuff. But this isn't the case on the ultra. Ultra line got rid of an underutilized feature that also isn't available on AMD, but people didn't like that so got mad at Intel for it. The ultra line also got caught up in the drama of the rare degradation issue in the 14th series. Ultra runs cooler than AMD and better at productivity tasks, marginally worse at gaming for the next equivalent pricepoint for AMD. Both are moot if you cant afford a decent GPU.

At $350 I'd probably save a bit more? Or just go with the most budget friendly AMD so you have more legroom to upgrade later.
