It was even more tempting to grab yesterday at that ~30 minute 138+tx flash price, but waited on the reviews, even if the price sounds crazy great compared to years ago. Hope anyone who buys posts on their experience with this. (Guess they're reliable enough.) Toss up whether I'd clean install Windows or find a new favorite Linux system. I tinkered a while back with plex, but some point probably try jellyfin/etc if I went harder on the multimedia server route.

It's not that great of a deal. I would much rather lose 4gb of ram and go with this one for about the same price. https://www.amazon.com/Upgraded-D...10INT&th=1

You get faster DDR5 ram, dual 2.5gbit intel nics, usbc power, newer wifi and bluetooth

Everyone should be wiping and installing fresh copies of Windows for EVERY new computer period. All the bloated nonsense only slows down the PC and hogs drive space. And it's free and easy to do.
Not necessarily. Especially if your computer has unique hardware or bespoke oem parts. It can be difficult to find the correct combination of drivers and software that won't bork something in your system. The stuff offered on a support page to download isn't always the best either. Such is life on Windows. If it's a super generic box like this where generic windows drivers will do and everything else is well controlled by the biis itself, then yeah go wipe it to your heart's content.

So, while this can stream via a steam link no problem, I was thinking that particular use case makes no sense. At this price you can get an appletv that does all that and much more. So, I think the use case for these things is shrinking. Basic office work can now be done on just about any device in your home with a screen.

How well would this system run a Minecraft server with a few people?

Thinking to setup tailscale exit node / VPN for streaming. Would this be overkill or buy something even cheaper?

Might be a dumb comment, but how about using this only for hosting a modded minecraft server? For like 6 - 10 people. Thanks

This a good option for a home assistant setup?
yes. more than required horsepower. I run haas, node-red and bunch of other docker images on a several generation old 4gb ram, 256gb hd mini pc.

best bet is to format the HD and reinstall from scratch. Better yet, if you are going to be using mostly the web browser, then install ubuntu linux. It is very stable and very much resistant to virus/malware.

For anyone on the fence about these:

For many years, these super low-end, budget systems have been the sort where you /could/ make them work for you, but only if you were an expert/tech professional, because you would really need to heavily modify the OS and disable a lot of security/update features for them to be usable at all. With all that being said, once you did that, the result would generally be a fairly usable and reliable system.

Starting with the N100 a few years back, that all changed. For the price, these chips are on another level. The N150 is the latest update of the N100 chip, and is slightly faster/more power efficient - very slightly - but otherwise the same. They really hit the sweet spot on this, and there's a reason you see so many of these types of mini-PC's floating around for around the $150 price point. You should probably still be at a level of tech competence where you are comfortable reinstalling and configuring Windows to get any sort of meaningful/reliable use out of these, but they are powerful enough to happily chug along on a fairly standard install now without too much tweaking.

For your average user (that is probably you), this is more than enough computer for anything you will ever do. It will be quiet and can probably just be left idling 24/7 without too much issue or noise from fans. It will take up very little space on your desk. It will handle a million browser tabs and play back videos or open Word documents without breaking a sweat. It will also consume very little power. These are really awesome little systems for anyone looking for a basic machine to perform daily tasks.

If you're an advanced user, you can really squeeze a lot out of these tiny boxes. I was actually able to install Fedora on one of these without too many issues, and then used it to download and compile Android from source without any problem. Yeah, it took a while, but it can do it, which is honestly amazing for $150. It has a full-fat version of the Intel video codecs, so video playback and transcoding (for the Plex/Jellyfin folks out there) will work incredibly well - fast, quiet, and energy efficient.

The form factor (combined with the power and price) also really opens the door to making all sorts of "appliances" - aka dedicated systems for plugging into a TV, doing home automation, running servers, etc. I would go as far as to say that these little systems absolutely eat up the Raspberry Pi's market - I see no need for that kind of a platform anymore when things like this exist.

This would also be a great little system to get for your kid if they are starting to get into computers. Plenty of stuff here for them to tweak and learn with, and it's not like you're so out of pocket if it manages to break or something.

Overall, strong recommendation for these if you have a fitting use case.

The story behind this discovery begins with a UEFI application we found on VirusTotal, signed with Microsoft's third-party UEFI certificate. This application has been publicly available since November 2024 when it was first submitted. However, the signature data indicates it was actually signed in October 2022, suggesting it may have been circulating for much longer.
