Recent reports indicate that some mini PCs, including those from brands like AceMagic, Kamrui, and others under the same manufacturer, were shipped with pre-installed spyware. This malware, identified as Backdoor:Win32/Bladabindi and Trojan:MSIL/RedLine!MSR, was found to be hidden in the Windows folder and even within the system's recovery partition, making it difficult to remove. These types of malware are known for their data-stealing capabilities.
The manufacturer, Shenzhen Shanminheng Technology Co., Ltd., acknowledged the issue and claimed it was limited to the initial batch of units and that they have since fixed the problem. However, reports suggest that this issue may have affected a wider range of mini PCs, including those sold through programs like Amazon Vine.
It's important to be cautious when purchasing mini PCs from lesser-known brands or directly from overseas manufacturers. Consider purchasing from established brands and retailers that have greater accountability for product quality and security.
If you have purchased a Kamrui or similar mini PC, it is recommended to:
Scan your device with a reputable antivirus and anti-malware program.
Consider reinstalling a fresh, clean copy of the operating system.
Be cautious about using the device for sensitive activities or storing personal data.

That is my concern when dealing with these types of systems. Also aware that there are processes that can be injected into the running system at the bios level typically for asset protection and management but that was probably pre UEFI. But a little bit of research indicates there are ways around even secure boot. Do a quick Google for BlackLotus bootkit

Anyone know how well this would work as a Jellyfin server, ie transcoding? Would this be able to handle 4k streaming? Multiple concurrent 1080p? Thanks

I got one of these, it took a 16gb sodimm fine, but was a no-go on an nvme drive.

It'd see it in the bios, but wouldn't install bootable windows. Every time the setup process restarted, it'd go to 'windows didn't start correctly'.

Wiped the drive, fresh partitions, more than once and that was as far as it got. Kamrui recommended a skeevy bios update that was to address nvme drives not working with the device. Downloaded from a google drive, and the two apps on it looked like 1990's dos box apps. The one to retrieve and restore the product key didn't work at all. The bios updater did but didn't report old/new versions. Same behavior after that.

The included m.2 drive is sata, and it's slower than EMMC that I've used. Slower than a lot of hard drives. So whatever ya do, don't pay them big bucks for 1tb or 2tb of bog slow sata storage.

I've seen a lot of this lately, Really old stuff getting pulled out of US warehouses and sold with a few updated parts to make it seem new. I'd have thought that we'd be all out of sata/m.2 motherboards and drives by now.

The support is terrific too. Blocked my three star review on amazon and tried to make me delete it before they'd do a return, but amazon did the return anyway. Kamrui also is the same as acemagic and a handful of others that all seem to sell the same sorts of minipcs. Minisforum and to a lesser extent Beelink seem to be somewhat legit. Not these other guys.

Edit: These #$#$ers are still emailing me, offering me $ to delete the review. I'd blocked them from sending me stuff on amazon messaging, so they dug up my email address. Unreal. "we'll put some crap parts in it and then spend hours and dollars trying to stop people from saying what it can and can't do."

I was just going to ask this? How do these do with plex? Would love to shut down my larger server to save energy and just use this for local streaming only.
The Intel N1xx CPUs are basically perfect for Plex.

I've been running my server on a similar Beelink Mini PC with an N100 for a couple of years now. It's nearly silent, uses very little power and can handle multiple simultaneous 4K transcodes without breaking a sweat. I'm running Proxmox on it with Plex in a container and there is more than enough power left to also run containers with all of my *Arr apps, download clients, HomeAssistant, etc.

I paid way more than this for a DDR5 version of otherwise the same specs 3 weeks ago and have had good luck. If this were around then I would've snagged this one.

Just got one of these last week. Replaced a over 10 year old laptop, love how small it is. From all the reviews I've been reading on these I went ahead and just did a clean install of Windows on it just to be safe.

Runs Roblox without any issues
How does one do a clean install of windows? Newbie question.

I used Windows media creation tool. It helps you create a USB that has Windows install files on it. All you have to do is plug in and boot from that USB (enter bios by pressing delete while cpu is booting up).

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../windows11

Before doing the install I highly suggest you find your Windows 11 key just in case you need it. Mine didn't ask for it but you never know if you'll need it for activation. I used #3 the Registry file method.

That is surprising and definitely a deal breaker if this only supports SATA M2. Are you sure yo have this exact model?
I bought two cheap mini pc's, one was $60 and the other $110, on Amazon nearly two years ago and both were NVMe ssd's.
Can anyone else confirm these ship with SATA and you can't boot to an NVMe?

Rufus is better for creating installation media. For one thing it allows you to specify a local admin account rather than a Microsoft ID.

Everyone should be wiping and installing fresh copies of Windows for EVERY new computer period. All the bloated nonsense only slows down the PC and hogs drive space. And it's free and easy to do.
