This is the older (discontinued) version of this controller with the ALPS sticks, not the newer hall effect version by the same name. The box will have a label on the front lower right of the box saying if it has the hall effect sticks.

Best buy sells the newer version for $45.

So I take the hall effect is a better version?

I have this one. It's a great controller overall. I use it for emulators on my iPad. It's heavier than some other 3rd party controllers, which i prefer.

From google Ai:
Hall effect and ALPS analog sticks are different technologies used in game controllers for detecting movement of the joystick. ALPS sticks use potentiometers, which are mechanical components that change resistance as they move, while Hall effect sticks use magnetic fields to detect position. Hall effect sticks are generally more accurate, have less drift over time, and often offer a smoother feel, but can be more expensive and power-hungry.

Hall effect uses magnetic fields instead of mechanical resistance to determine direction.
Mechanical resistance sticks are the ones that will drift over time as the resistance wears due to friction. Hall effect sticks should not encounter this drift after prolonged use like mechanical ones can.

I understand if you're buying it solely for the SNES design, but you can get a better controller from the same company for the same price, with Hall Effect sticks and triggers and supports both bluetooth and a dongle.

[EDIT]
Actually, it looks like there's a cheaper one already on SD: https://slickdeals.net/f/18375631-8bitdo-ultimate-2c-wireless-controller-w-hall-effect-joysticks-purple-25-49-free-s-h-w-walmart-or-on-35?attrsrc=JFYCarousel%3APosition%3A16%7CJFYCarousel%3AType%3Athread&src=jfy

Really want to get one but the shoulder triggers are digital, not analog.

There is, at least for the most recent one. Sadly I don't think it's looking likely 8bitdo will also update the discontinued controllers:\

I have this older version and it works great playing games on my PC and switch. No issues over the 3 years I've owned it.

There are videos on YouTube on how to update but it's not as easy as using their update tool
