this basic brand is no different from buying a random letters seller.

There was a price drop from last week; the previous frontpage post was for $18.90.

Paid $24 a year ago.

Used yesterday to reinstall some hinges.

Cr-V steel seems really hard.

The look and feel is not as good as my other DeWalt set.

The case is a plug.

Correct. So feel free to get chisels even cheaper if you find them.

Also, cheap chisels often work great great. You end up with a blade dulls much more quickly. But on the other hand, the softer steels also tend to sharpen much quicker. And if you learn to free-hand sharpen, it takes less than a minute to go from working with a dull chisel to one that's razor sharp.

I'd recommend that until you take the time to get skilled with using and sharpening chisels, stick with a cheap set and instead focus your attention on sharpening. Paul Seller's sharpening system [google.com] is highly popular. For cheapskates, Rex Krueger shows an alternative [youtube.com] using thin, inexpensive plates [amazon.com] glued to something flat like shelf or melamine [homedepot.com] board. I personally use just a double-sided stone like this [amazon.com] on top of drawer liner [walmart.com] along with a leather strop [amazon.com] glued to a board or MDF.
