You obviously missed the Fallout and Lord of the Rings tie-ins.

It's been bad for a few years...it arguably started with murder at karlov manor (thin story and mechanics of detective/crime tropes), continued with thunder junction (thin story and mechanics of cowboy/western tropes), duskmourn (thin story/slightly better mechanics of horror movie tropes) and of course aether drift (thin story/mechanics of racing, Mario kart tropes).
Bloomburrow, Tarkir Dragonstorm and foundations were the only things over past two years that felt like the designers understood the magic the gathering aesthetic.
Universes Beyond have show how creatively bankrupt the game has become.

Very true. The real start of the downturn was the Amazon dumping of stock with Capenna, Forgotten Realms, and the Innistrads (let this plane die a horrible death please).

That said, I am buying 2 of these because I like the bundle boxes and die sets. If I get a useful card or two, that will be a bonus.

LOTR in concept was a reasonable extension. Fallout is a bit cringe but not too crazy, you can extend the idea of a Planeswalker into the Fallout universe pretty seamlessly.
But racing in MTG is a whole new level of WTF.
And this is coming from someone who likes racing.
but yeah I havent really kept up with MTG since the 90s if you couldn't tell

I figured being the first big online crypto exchange was the warning sign, but maybe they were just ahead of the curve.

Anyway, back to my ALF pogs...

It's been all downhill since Arabian Nights.
