For those who are on the fence and trying to compare to Costco ones.
The Philips Sonicare HX6871/49 (ProtectiveClean 6100) and HX6829/70 (Optimal Clean) are both solid electric toothbrushes, but they differ in features, performance, and target audience. Below is a detailed comparison:
### 1. Brushing Modes and Intensities
- HX6871/49 (ProtectiveClean 6100):
- Modes: 3 (Clean, White, Gum Care).
- Intensities: 3 (High, Medium, Low), allowing customization for sensitivity or cleaning strength.
- BrushSync Mode Pairing: Automatically adjusts to the optimal mode when a compatible microchipped brush head (e.g., W DiamondClean) is attached, syncing intensity for specific cleaning goals like whitening or gum care.
- Ideal for users who want flexibility in brushing intensity and mode customization, especially for whitening or sensitive gums.
- HX6829/70 (Optimal Clean):
- Modes: Likely 1–2 modes (typically Clean, possibly Gum Care in similar models, but not explicitly detailed in sources).
- Intensities: Single intensity (no adjustable settings mentioned).
- BrushSync: Supports brush head replacement reminders but lacks mode pairing functionality seen in the 6100.
- Suited for straightforward cleaning with less emphasis on customization.
Winner: HX6871/49 for more modes and adjustable intensities, offering a tailored brushing experience.
### 2. Cleaning Performance
- Both models use Philips Sonicare's sonic technology, delivering up to 62,000 brush movements per minute for effective plaque removal.
- HX6871/49:
- Removes up to 7x more plaque than a manual toothbrush.
- Whitens teeth in 1 week with the W DiamondClean brush head.
- Pressure sensor alerts users with a pulsing sound to prevent over-brushing, protecting gums and enamel.
- HX6829/70:
- Claims to remove up to 10x more plaque than a manual toothbrush, though this may depend on the brush head used.
- Also features a pressure sensor and BrushSync for replacement reminders.
- Marketed as improving gum health up to 100% more than a manual toothbrush.
Winner: HX6829/70 might edge out slightly for plaque removal (10x vs. 7x claim), but real-world performance likely depends on brush head and technique. HX6871/49's whitening focus is a plus for stain removal.
### 3. Brush Heads and Compatibility
- HX6871/49:
- Compatible with standard click-on Sonicare brush heads (e.g., W DiamondClean, C3 Premium Plaque Control).
- Automatically adjusts settings based on the brush head via BrushSync.
- Includes reminders for brush head replacement (light and beep).
- HX6829/70:
- Also uses click-on brush heads, likely including an Optimal Clean or similar head designed for plaque and gum health.
- Features BrushSync for replacement reminders but not mode pairing.
- Sources note replacement heads can be expensive for this line.
Winner: HX6871/49 for smarter brush head integration with mode pairing, enhancing versatility.
### 4. Battery Life and Charging
- HX6871/49:
- Up to 2 weeks of use on a single charge (based on 2-minute brushing twice daily).
- Includes a compact charging base and premium travel case (not USB-charging).
- HX6829/70:
- Similar 2-week battery life.
- Comes with a travel case, but no mention of USB-charging or enhanced case features.
Winner: Tie, as both offer comparable battery life and travel cases. HX6871/49's case is described as "premium," which may indicate better quality.
### 5. Design and Features
- HX6871/49:
- Available in colors like Navy Blue, with a sleek design.
- Smart features include SmarTimer (2-minute brushing guide) and QuadPacer (30-second interval alerts).
- No smartphone app integration, keeping it simple but less tech-forward.
- HX6829/70:
- Often sold in duo packs, making it cost-effective for multiple users.
- Similar smart features (SmarTimer, pressure sensor), but fewer customization options.
- Described as a solid choice for less demanding users seeking effective cleaning without advanced features.
Winner: HX6871/49 for its premium design and smarter features, though HX6829/70 is practical for value-driven buyers.
### 6. Noise Level
- Both models are around 60 dB, typical for sonic toothbrushes. This is quieter than Oral-B models but may still feel loud to some users.
Winner: Tie, as noise levels are similar.
### 7. Price and Value
- HX6871/49:
- MSRP typically $100–$150, reflecting its higher-end features (3 modes, 3 intensities, smart brush head pairing).
- Offers a polished brushing experience, ideal for users upgrading from basic models or prioritizing whitening/gum care.
- HX6829/70:
- Likely lower MSRP ($50–$70 range for similar ProtectiveClean models), especially in duo packs.
- Great for budget-conscious buyers or first-time Sonicare users, though replacement heads add to long-term costs.
Winner: HX6829/70 for affordability, especially in multi-packs, but HX6871/49 justifies its price with more features.
### 8. Target Audience
- HX6871/49: Best for users who want a customizable, premium brushing experience with a focus on whitening, gum health, or sensitive teeth. Ideal for those with braces, crowns, or veneers due to its adjustable intensities and pressure sensor.
- HX6829/70: Suited for users seeking a reliable, no-frills sonic toothbrush with strong plaque removal and gum health benefits. Perfect for households (duo packs) or those new to electric toothbrushes.
### Final Verdict
- Choose HX6871/49 if you value customization (multiple modes/intensities), whitening, or a premium design, and don't mind paying more for a refined experience.
- Choose HX6829/70 if you want a cost-effective, straightforward toothbrush with solid plaque removal and gum health benefits, especially in a duo pack for shared use.

I'm in the market for an electric brush, but I don't know much about them. This one is within my budget. Is this a slick deal?
I'd avoid this brand if you are just starting.
I've been using it for many years and recently their quality has been poor, independent of the model. Just yesterday I purchased a 2 pack from Costco and one of them was bad out of the box. If I didn't have a stock of tips for a couple of years I would try oral B or even quip

The one under $100 in Costco is different model, the $169 (usually on sale for $129) is same model as this.

The heads on these for name brand are 2 for $30 on amazon. Is there a Phillips model that has pressure sensor and timer that has cheaper heads or is that about the norm for e-brushes?
