I had never looked at EG before, and dang they have great photos of the guitars. Sweetwater has been one of my favs because of their standard set of photos, but EG goes ham with the glamor shots, they get great angles for the tops, fretboard, etc. Maybe a bit TOO glamor shotty, it looks like they use a bit of sharpening, up the saturation, etc., but not sure on that, maybe the photos are just that good.As far as this deal, it is a great deal for R8s, but looking through the list, none of the tops really jumped out me, but maybe they are supposed to be that way for this line. I am a sucker for a quilt top, or even just decent flaming, but there are only a few that seem to have any, and I am not really a fan of the tops being so obviously two piece with unmatched pieces. That might be traditional/historically accurate, but it really sticks out to me. If spending over four grand after tax, I want my pick to be really pretty in my eyes, can get most of the other features that are more about playability for much less $$.
R8 are supposed to have a very muted non-flamed top.
You have to get R9 if you want a nicer pattern

Yeah I know, I guess I was saying R8s aren't for me because of that. Just a personal thing. A burst (not an ACTUAL vintage burst, an R9 is fine) is on my "if I win the lottery" (that I never play Big Grin) list... but that would be after picking up a vintage black beauty, one of the crazy crimson division customs, and a couple of supremes. I dig the pretty ones Big Grin.

And Gibson does not go crazy about the flames. Not like PRS.

I rarely play, but I do look at them a lot.

For me the pattern and the flames are very important, I've been planning on buying a lemon burst for years now...

Well, they do... RARELY... and it will cost you. That said, some of the nicest quilting I have ever seen has been on Gibsons, mainly the Crimson Division stuff, but not always, e.g. the Ultimas, the Elegants.

A few examples of the prettiest I have ever seen:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-lQpxR8yw8 (I would pay a lot for this one, if I had that kind of disposable cash)

A few more here(pretty much art guitars here): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQ7uYmd5cKo

A lemon burst is on my list too (sort of), I would like to pick up a greenie, where I guess that has aged to a lemon burst (that is what it looks like to me anyway) but started out as a cherry or tea or something like that.

I have a hard time distinguishing between a Trad Pro, Classic, and a Standard if it weren't for the truss rod cover. I haven't handled one of these, but I think it would look and feel like other Les Pauls. Funny to see people commenting on resonance when the whole point of using the hardest, densest wood was to keep it from resonating..
because despite our best efforts, it still resonates, and some people are willing to chase that tone

I just bought a Gibson Les Paul Custom white with the gold hardware for $6,000. And the one thing I can pass along from my experience is that .. I'm not sure an electric guitar is worth $6,000. And you can continue that thought for yourself all the way down to these. I've played these and it bothered me the way the back looked so radically different than the top. It looks .. kinda fake .. kinda like .. two different guitars were mated together. Or something.

If I was gonna spend $3,800 dollars on a guitar, it would be an acoustic guitar without a pickup. There really is a difference there, you can really hear it.

But as guys have pointed out in this thread, there are many fabulous guitar brands being made today. And it matters so very much for an electric guitar that you have the right amp. And these days, the effects that are available are .. shocking. So, you take all that in to account and ..

.. I consider myself pretty stupid for spending $6k on that Les Paul on the wall over there.

I play a 1984 Flying V so .. I don't even touch that Custom. I put it on a recording and I'm like, "Yeah, see it sounds like a Gibson. I have one of those already."

When you invest significant money like this, diversify your arsenal of sounds. Like sockets in a toolbox, get a diverse amount of tools for a variety of sounds and don't double up.
Im with you on the lpc dislike...the maple cap makes it a boat anchor, and i couldn't really gel with the ebony board. I traded my 68 black beauty ri for a r6 in darkburst and I think I made a fantastic decision

I estimate that after all the baby boomers are gone, the "vintage" guitars including Gibson 50s reissue will go down in value drastically. I recommend Jim Lill's video on tonewood. Days are gone where guitar manufactures can BS their way to jack up their prices for "vintage tone."Good craftmanship is good craftmanship, though. Try on a guitar that you looks appealing to you and see whether it feels good in your hands, that's about it.
YES!! and I can't wait for it. Look at what's happening to the 'tube amp only' crowd. Majority of new bands are using modelers and PC plugins now. Insane prices purely due to nostalgia will be a thing of past when companies like Yamaha, Alavarez and PRS are making solid budget instruments for everyone.

Hahahahahaha

Those are such trash.

This faux aging is a very poor quality process.

I had bought an r9, gently aged, the varnish was peeling off everywhere, got it it returned and rejected any replacement and have no regrets.

Much nicer than Gibson USA version I have as a finished product, but Murphy lab is for display purposes only.

Oh, I truly was not roasting you in the comments. I think it's a wonderful Slickdeal and I thank you for posting it. It could save folks ONE THOUSAND SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS. I'd challenge any other Slickdeal to save people that much money.

I was trying to give an overview on the entire horizon of electric guitars at the midway point of 2025.

As for the "Murphy Labs" stuff .. I'm old enough to remember when they first started with this "aged look" thing. I got a catalogue and I'm looking at it and I was entirely confused. I thought, "Why the hell would you want that? Looks like a garage sale guitar". AND THEN .. I saw the price of the one beat half to death was MORE than the perfectly new one. And I just started laughing.

I thought, "How do I get that job? 'HEY BUDDY .. I'LL BEAT THE LIVING CRAP OUT OF YOUR GUITAR FOR 800 BUCKS'"

These Gibson Custom Shop guitars are a part of the Historic Series. The R means Reissue and the number is the year of the guitar it's modeled after. The R8 is 1958 has a chonky baseball bat neck, the R9 is 1959,the goldilocks neck of between the 58 and the 60 and the R0 is the 1960 reissue with the "slim taper neck" which by today's standards isn't THAT thin.

There are more guitars in the lineup like a 1954,1957 etc. but the R8, R9 and R0 are the most popular with the R9 being the most popular by far.
