Really? I bought the second one a few months ago and I was looking forward to listening to it.
How does it get 4.3 star average rating if it's that bad?
That said, if you're a reader and are considering - just buy it. It's reeeeeeeeally good. I'm not sure I buy the background plot about why the world in the book is the way it is (especially regarding energy), but I can look the other way considering how incredible the rest of the writing is. Don't worry, this isn't a spoiler.
I think it's also the stark comparison to the combination of excellent writing of the author (rather than the screenwriter that edited it) and Will Wheaton's on-point voice acting. Simple excellent. The movie might just be 'meh'? But standing next to the audiobook and the original book itself - it's polished garbage to me, not made by someone who loves the book and wanted to do it justice. Just a money grab based on marketing.
Wait…you didn't like 100 pages of Prince trivia. Also the deadline time length annoyed me. The final 3 shards were found in about 2 hours, yeah right.

I agree. The movie fell short after reading and admiring the storyline and near death experience of Wade to win the contest. Also condensing the 3 keys & 3 gates into 3 keys/gates really undercut the effort of the High 5 and difficulty of the contest.
However, to replicate the book on film would have cost a fortune, buying rights to so many icon 70's & 80's movies, music and games. They didn't want to spend that type of money and the books' story would need 2 movies.
I wish they kept how Wade found the first key, that was great writing. That discovery in Latin class and how anyone, even someone with no money, could find the Copper Key really resonated with me. I also hated that the movie took away the heroic act Wade did for the world, to infiltrate IOI, and how they give that to Art3mis was shameful.
