You could get two (or three) AC1200 WiFi5 for $10 each, install DDWRT, and use them in a mesh configuration. Remember that WiFi6+ isn't needed unless your clients support it (thermostat, older Dots, etc. do not)

FreshTomato seems to be slow in supporting AX or newer routers (if ever). Was thinking of just going with another Asus maybe running Merlin, but this would be way cheaper....

Instructions are here for the e8450, I don't have this specific model but have done openwrt, essentially there is usually two ways to load, either thru debug cables/modes or through firmware flashing (easier way). It appears the e8450 is just straight flashing the full firmware package, and updates are done by flashing the partial firmware packages. There does not seem to be documentation on reverting back to stock, but generally dd-wrt can flash stock firmware images and it'll work, and/or you may need to do so thru debugging.

The filesystem does need to be modified to support OpenWRT, but if you follow the instructions here, it's not too difficult: https://github.com/dangowrt/owrt-ubi-installer

I'd avoid the AC1200 as the LAN ports are limited to 100mbps.
