You could get two (or three) AC1200 WiFi5 for $10 each, install DDWRT, and use them in a mesh configuration. Remember that WiFi6+ isn't needed unless your clients support it (thermostat, older Dots, etc. do not)

Got a link to a guide or is it super easy to flash? I'm looking to upgrade from my Asus RT-AC1900 running FreshTomato, although I'm not sure this would be it. FreshTomato seems to be slow in supporting AX or newer routers (if ever). Was thinking of just going with another Asus maybe running Merlin, but this would be way cheaper....

Instructions are here for the e8450, I don't have this specific model but have done openwrt, essentially there is usually two ways to load, either thru debug cables/modes or through firmware flashing (easier way). It appears the e8450 is just straight flashing the full firmware package, and updates are done by flashing the partial firmware packages. There does not seem to be documentation on reverting back to stock, but generally dd-wrt can flash stock firmware images and it'll work, and/or you may need to do so thru debugging.

All ewaste. At this point you should be looking for dualband wifi7 or better yet triband wifi6e mesh systems minimum.

The filesystem does need to be modified to support OpenWRT, but if you follow the instructions here, it's not too difficult: https://github.com/dangowrt/owrt-ubi-installer

For $20? Really my old AC (WiFi 5) system is perfectly usable....I just like to tinker.
