I currently have the R10 and using the RF 100-400 for wildlife photography. My upgrade path is the RF 100-500L which is also on sale and I was waiting for the R7 Mark ii to be released, but can't afford both lens and camera.

Would getting the R5 Mark ii and using only the RF 100-400 be wasting the cameras potential? The pre shooting would be great to have for birding. I rented the RF 100-500L and got some amazing captures with the R10 so I am thinking get the glass first but the R5 Mark ii would be amazing to have.

Yes the pre shooting option is great! Additionally 45mp will allow you to corp the images and still remain with plenty of resolution and will give you extra reach!!!

As someone that owns an R5, R5C and R5 MKII

The R5C is still better for video
The R5 is still a better value for most

The R5 MKII is an interesting middle man with some niche features that most people really won't make use of.

Eye control? Faster digital readout when the mechanical shutter is an option, strange restrictions on video codec, etc.

I'm happy I have one so I can test and review the tech for other people. Purely as a hybrid photographer the R5C is still my favorite.

I had hoped things like CLOG2 would make this a better R5C but it didn't.

The dynamic range and such is still better on both the old cameras.

Thanks OP. This was the best deal I saw for this camera and I'm glad I acted before it disappeared. I previously had R5 which I had since sold to a private buyer at a great discount. I agree with someone who said that mark ii is more of an update instead of a revolution like 5D2. But I still found the improved AF worth it for me. My primary use is to video kids swimming meets that proved tough for even R5 with heads in and out of water. Mark ii so far has been much better.
