Saving trolls time. Yes 256gb sucks. Easily solvable with external drive or internal drive replacement kit. Stop bothering everyone and ignore these threads. There is no better performing mini-sized desktop at this price that comes close to the Minis overall performance, noise, ports, and power use

Holy Moly, you pay an extra $220 for an extra 256GB of storage.

The base Mac mini at 16/256 is a spectacular deal at $470. Just get external storage. Anybody who needs more than 16GB of RAM knows they need more. If you don't know how much RAM you need, it's likely that 16GB is plenty.

Apple is never going to win a price war and there are certainly mini-PCs that are going to be available cheaper but the track records, especially on the smaller oversea brands are still TBD. These are machines that are going to be capable of running 7-10+ years.

Anyone successfully replaced internal ssd? I see videos online but are those always successful?
It's not hard if you build PC before, but why bother. It's a desktop, external drive can be just as fast and cheaper

I've replaced the NVMes in several laptops, but nothing Apple. All mine worked. I just cloned the drive onto the new drive and installed it.

I mean this is just a ridiculous amount of power for less than $500. I'm considering picking one of these up to try out music production but my M1 Air with 8GB is somehow still chugging along so I can't justify it just yet.

Is there anything really cool I can do with this - beyond the obvious stuff most people are using it for?
I got mine to run homebridge and leave on 24/7. I am now able integrate my Reolink cameras with HomeKit. I'm sure there's a lot of other stuff homebridge has to offer if you're into smart home stuff.

Agreed. A good thunderbolt 4 external will have plenty of storage speed if you so need it.

agree mostly but speed will suffer somewhat (10-15%) and there's some annoying apple things which must go on native drive. HOWEVER, it's not a big deal.I installed android studio and xc9de entirely on the external drive - sure you need to manually adjust the paths, even after install but if you're doing any dev work, it's easy And once it's done, it's done. Granted , I have my main windows PC for anything demanding more than 16gb but I'm using it less and less. Heck, power saving alone is $20 monthly so the mini practically pays for itself in 2 years. I last used Mac back in 2005 and the same frustration back then are still around. Except the speed and costs more than offsets it. There is NO PC that matches mini and finally Apple has put severe pricing pressure throughout the person computer space - see windows pricing plummeting. AMD is (fast?)catching up , and Intel will be back but not for another 2 years in such a way to match Apple.
