These XX devices that play everything up to PS1 with some good results for Dreamcast, PSP, and N64. Around $60-80 retail, but often <$50 as here
The mid-level android based devices like the RG CUBE (not really comparable), Retroid 5, Retroid Flip 2, Retroid Mini 2 which will play the 32bit 3D platforms through PS2 including Gamecube. $150-$250 retail, but seldom significantly cheaper.
If you want WiiU, Switch, or PS3, then you're talking a PC-like handheld e.g. SteamDeck, Ally, etc. > $400.
Controls and screen dimensions vary greatly for the low end as the old emulation is less dependent on analog sticks and triggers. I believe there are so many variants because they are cheap and can be nostalgic, but under the hood, the XX devices are all the same. 16x9 or wide screen with more modern controls makes sense for the mid-tier, esp if you want to stream games to PS5, Xbox, or Moonlight/Sunshine.
What makes this one - CubeXX nice as compare to the other XX devices is the higher res, more vertical screen and nicer sticks. If I didn't already have other XX devices, I'd definitely pick this one up.
I don't have a mid tier device as I'm a very casual gamer - just a quick 15-30 minutes here and there. If I were to spend a lot of time on a modern games, I'd do it on a Steamdeck or Ally. I dabble in the mid-tier by using an older Samsung S20FE and a Gamesir G8 Galileo to see what it would be like - but there seems to be a lot more customization required in the mid-tier and I just don't have time.

GBA ends up with black bars or bezels, but you end up with an image about the same size as a 3.5" non-square anyways, while getting a much bigger picture for 4:3 (or 8:7) content
I'm running MuOS on mine personally; I think it's the best balance of a fuss-free-out-of-box experience while still exposing stuff like Syncthing, latency controls, and shaders that you lose out on if you run MinUI or NextUI.
The best guides for setup here are https://retrogamecorps.
If you mostly want to play PSP/other widescreen stuff, or more demanding PS2/GC+ content, look elsewhere. And if you're exclusively into GBA or have major vertical handheld nostalgia, also look elsewhere; otherwise IMO this is the sweet spot for retro handheld gaming in the $50 range.
You have more real estate to work with on the 4" CubeXX, at the cost of having to think a little bit more about scaling options or shaders if you're a pixel peeper like me. Build quality on both is good, but the Brick definitely feels more premium due to the metal construction and the sheer physical density; the CubeXX feels light and plasticky - good plastic, unlike say, the Powkiddy devices I've used, but still plastic.
The brick has very clicky buttons - not better or worse than the CubeXX, just different - and is decidedly more pocketable. The CPU is a bit beefier, but not enough so to tackle PS2+ anyways, so in practice it doesn't matter.
Why I still own both: The Brick is the perfect machine as a pocketable RPG player, or as an extremely nostalgic Game Boy toy with a higher-end feel, but as with most small verticals, the ergonomics are bad for the shoulder buttons, or just generally for longer play sessions.
(I also don't like the stock Brick OS or any of the CFWs available on it as much as MuOS on the CubeXX - that alone leads me to reach for the CubeXX a bit more often; that may change when MuOS actually comes out for the Brick).
GBA/Ps1/GBC are going to be what I play. more or less GBA for the pokemon rom hacks that people made/and games and such.
