Depends on your needs. The M4 is much more powerful, and you're getting 16GB or ram on the base model for less. You also can run two external monitors and have the lid open. On the M3, the lid has to be closed with two external monitors, and that laptop costed more for a base model with less ram.
On a similar note, if I find I need at least 32gb ram to keep windows from getting sluggish, would the m416gb be enough? I can't fathom 16gb being enough, but I'm thinking of switching to apple and can't tell how much memory apple needs vs windows.

It's the best laptop out there for that range. I bought it when it was a little more than this, a great buy still.

I'm wondering the same thing. My Ultrabook with 16gb RAM and i7-8550u is 7 years old and runs out of memory with many browser tabs open.

You'll be fine … I have an M1 Mac Mini w/ 8GB and it can run multiple apps, browser tabs, and edit 4k video with no issues… and this M4 is waaaay better

Is a M3 24gb better than m4 16gb?

M3 isn't bad at all. If the 24gb is cheap enough I would still consider it

15inch deal 256GB at $899 at Best Buy? Must be a regional deal. Mine is higher. What other retailers are you seeing at $899?
Sorry, I should have noted that M3 15inch is $899

I'm keeping an eye on the Mac mini-PCs . How many tabs do you guys use? With my browser and all its tabs open, plus the game I always have open it's 3gb used. So with 16gb and 70% in use it's looking like Windows is gobbling up around 8gb. That's A LOT.

Can you guys do some quick math and subtract out your running apps to see how much the base OS consumes please?
