gamers, you only need 6-8 cores, so more at home is why? maybe if you high res twitch streaming your gameplay while talking to your squad... bare in mind ryzen 9's may require very different ram sticks from ryzen 7 or 5, so triple check with your mobo maker before upgrading.
This guy is clueless. Just ignore him. Different ram. ROFL.

yeah this is a last hurrah upgrade for AM4 people. It's not a massive upgrade from my 5700x so I'll wait. I don't feel the upgrade need every generation or even 2, I like to go for 3+ to feel it. If what I have now is meeting needs, why not...

I have a 4 year old 5950X but it started restarting randomly while in low power mode (e.g. idle state, locked screen). Turning off C states in BIOS helped a bit but the random restarts still sometimes happen. Hopefully the 5900XT fixes that.
I had a 3600 that would BSOD with a different stop code every time after entering low power mode. Issue was defective core. You can test by using Ryzen Master to disable cores 1 at a time then let it idle for 24 hours (I just have it play Youtube videos). If the issue goes away with the defective core disabled, you can get a warranty replacement.

Probably not building new, but maxing out their current AM4 platform. At least that's what I'm doing.
price matched at micro center and put it in, upgraded from 3700x, typing on the machine right now, extreme happy with this.
use case: many VM and docker containers and vibe coding with local LLM

Looking at this to upgrade my 3700X. Not ready to do a full system upgrade, but I think this would extend my current system for 3-4 years (already have 32GB of DDR4-3600). Use case is mostly video transcoding/editing, Photoshop, and gaming. Comments welcome.

2015 wants your argument back. As games are first developed for consoles that get 16 threads at their disposal they are carefully threaded to make use of every thread available. I've tested modern games on old X99 chips (E5 2690V4, a 14 core 2.6-3.5Ghz) paired with a 6650XT. It played The Finals, NBA 2K25, Madden 25, Cyberpunk, Starfield and more at high refresh rates. Those are all modern games that run on modern game consoles. Slow, Ryzen 1xxx-like cores (or worse), keeping up with the latest and greatest solely because games are multithreaded well now.

Happened to both of my 5900s. Only CPUs I have ever had go bad. I had one system replaced under warranty. The second system was one month out of warranty and AMD would not replace it. This is the CPU I replaced it with. Going from 12/24 to 8/16 most likely hurt my virtualization and rendering. But, this CPU is supposed to be better for gaming. If I only had time...

I have a B450-I with a 2600 combo. I have a really small case, maybe 6L if I remember correctly. Will I need to upgrade to a larger case and cooler if I get this? I have the Noctua NHL9-a cooler, I'm guessing that's not enough for this upgrade?

Upgrade the cooler, it will run but will thermal throttle. Get something like the AXP90. The case size doesn't really make that much difference, you just need some airflow.

Hey all,

Got this deal and installed it successfully. I am getting idle temps around 60ish and spikes at 90 for Helldivers. Previously, a 3600x used to run around 40s with the same setup.

I got a Lian Li case and a Corsair 100i 2-fan AIO cooler. Anyone else experiencing this?

Your AIO isn't enough for this CPU... the 3600x sips power compared to this CPU
