Display is inherently strange. it's portrait orientation instead of landscape. Software makes it landscape. Overlays like the AMD one show up oriented portrait. You've been warned.
You can install steam deck os on this one now.
It's been confirmed that the software improvements to windows they're making for the ROG Xbox Ally are coming to other handhelds as well:

> Similar full-screen Xbox experiences will be rolling out to other Windows handhelds, starting next year.

There are trade offs.

Ally has VRR screen, much better software and updates, astonishingly better speakers. Overall, it's a much better user experience. The screen is a bit small for me at 7".

LeGo has a bigger, more vibrant screen but it's a native portrait screen so it does not do VRR. Its speakers are the definitively worst speakers I have experienced on ANY handheld in the last 15 years. The detachable controllers are cool but you'll need the 3d printed custom grips for anything remotely comfortable. The software is lackluster.

I've had the Steamdeck LCD, ROG Ally Z1E, Legion Go, ROG Ally X, and currently MSI Claw 8 AI+.

How would you rank each? I'm still on a day 1 steam deck and I love it, but will probably upgrade in a year or two.

I'm a tinkerer so I don't mind tweaking things. I play unplugged alot and value a larger screen.

SD LCD < Ally Z1E < LeGo < Ally X < MSI Claw 8

Value-wise, I'd either mod a used Ally Z1E or mod used LeGo. If you have money, Ally X or MSI Claw 8 is best.

"upgrading" to this LeGo 1 from SD LCD. Will find out when I get it. Just figure what others are saying that Z2E will likely not be 2x the performance but close to 2x the price increase. LeGo 2 with OLED is tempting though...

Software or hardware issue?

May trade in my rog ally z1e for this. The bigger screen is worth it. Am I missing something?

The Legion Go lacks variable refresh rate and, unless an update has changed things, it reportedly has worse battery life than the Z1E Ally (which already has pretty bad battery life tbh).

Otherwise, it's mostly just a size + system software preference thing (Asus's Armory Crate vs. Lenovo's software). But both also support SteamOS (and Bazzite if you'd prefer dual booting between Windows and unofficial SteamOS).

If you are referring to the portrait orientation display, it is a hardware issue. No amount of software/bios updates can "fix" that.

Check out the 81whr battery mod if you want to improve the battery life. I would recommend checking out the FB group and/or subreddit.

There have been some real interesting benchmarks lately showing how much faster SteamOS runs games compared to Windows (using Legion Go S). I have the SD OLED now. Will wait until MS optimizes Windows for handheld.

I've seen reviews showing the opposite as well

Anyone think this'll hit $400 eventually or no chance?
