Display is inherently strange. it's portrait orientation instead of landscape. Software makes it landscape. Overlays like the AMD one show up oriented portrait. You've been warned.

It's been confirmed that the software improvements to windows they're making for the ROG Xbox Ally are coming to other handhelds as well:

> Similar full-screen Xbox experiences will be rolling out to other Windows handhelds, starting next year.

Anyone think this'll hit $400 eventually or no chance?
I think there's a chance. Target had these for $350 a couple of weeks ago. The $500 price is the normal on-sale price.

The Legion Go S z1 extreme seems like it greatly improves on all the issues with this handheld, and comes in a steam OS flavor, but costs $330 more and is on backorder. Hoping for deals on it soon enough though

I thought I'd use my steamdeck alot but have used it less than 50 hours. I guess what I'm saying is, really think about whether you're going to use this kind of device alot before dropping this kind of coin, because it may end up a rarely used paperweight. Personally I would have gotten much more use out of a used gaming laptop.

For more perspective, would you elaborate why that was for you? Is it the screen size, ergonomics, or performance?

If you are referring to the portrait orientation display, it is a hardware issue. No amount of software/bios updates can "fix" that.
Good to know, thanks!

Oh yes, those reliable leaks. Reminds me of that 2019 BF launch for the Switch 2 Wink

Have this, played it with Windows for a while and just became annoyed with the lack of intuitiveness. Installed Bazzite (like Steam OS) and it made my experience 100x better. Highly recommend.

I'm a tinkerer so I don't mind tweaking things. I play unplugged alot and value a larger screen. SD LCD < Ally Z1E < LeGo < Ally X < MSI Claw 8Value-wise, I'd either mod a used Ally Z1E or mod used LeGo. If you have money, Ally X or MSI Claw 8 is best.
What mods would you do to either the Ally Z1E or LeGo to improve performance/playability?

I like to play assetto corsa competizione on the LeGo, mostly for the fact that AMD AMFM2 allows to visually double the frame rate at relatively high in game graphics settings. At 800p I get up to 109fps at 30 Watts TDP or 90fps at 20 Watts TDP.
This is not supported under Steam Os, sadly. My Steam Deck Oled has a hard time pushing 60fps in the same game at much lower settings.
it really depends on what games you're playing but at least for the racing Sims I tried, it's not even close - as much as I like the form factor and Oled brightness of the Steam Deck.
so either way you actively run at less then 60fps and then add more latency for double the "frames"

frame generation is a worthless joke for these devices

The Legion Go lacks variable refresh rate and, unless an update has changed things, it reportedly has worse battery life than the Z1E Ally (which already has pretty bad battery life tbh).

Otherwise, it's mostly just a size + system software preference thing (Asus's Armory Crate vs. Lenovo's software). But both also support SteamOS (and Bazzite if you'd prefer dual booting between Windows and unofficial SteamOS).
that is simply not true, GAMER NEXUS has a video review of it winning against the ALLY in every single profile

For the LeGo, 81whr battery mod and comfort grips. For ROG Ally, 74hwr battery mod and TMR joystick upgrade. I would also highly recommend the skull & co grip case for the ROG Ally. Not necessary but pretty awesome.

I went the ROG ALLY, 4TB, 74Wh and the Skull Co grip myself. Love it. Will wait until MS pushes the lightweight Windows for handhelds. Curious about the pricing and reception of the ROG Xbox Ally X. Personally, I think it's a hideous looking handheld. MS doesn't seem to care about its success. The whole idea is behind the new Windows handheld experience and they're on the right track. Windows 11 is too bogged down on handhelds.

I have both...Lenovo has much worse speakers.....beyond that its fine
Lenovo settings are trash out of the box, but with some setting tweaks, they are actually pretty good. I usually use headphone anyways so it was never going to be a deciding factor but it was a night and day difference after applying the sound adjustments
