Unless stated otherwise they do not have any storage and you need to populate it with your own drives. They do have memory though, they're literally a computers with a custom OS ready to go

Pretty much just storing files. What do you suggest?
Usually these machines with the beefier processors, people are doing things like running Plex servers (with transcoding), security camera recording / object detection, and stuff like that.

If you just want file sharing, paying for the beefier processor is probably overkill. The low end units with the cheap Arm chips should be able to handle that.

Dang. I'm tempted. I was considering a N150 mini PC + DAS, but this would be better from a pure storage perspective. USB connection for hard drive enclosure -> PC would be inferior compared to this and at best I'd save some small amount money with JBOD setup or none if I go with a RAID supported enclosure.
This 4 bay RAID enclosure is currently $114: https://slickdeals.net/f/18394210-4-bay-orico-raid-hard-drive-enclosure-for-3-5-sata-hdds-up-to-88tb-storage-114-free-shipping?src=SiteSearch

You can get that with a mini-PC for around $250. Compared to $520 that's a pretty big savings that can go towards buying hard drives.

I need to back up photos primarily. I think 4 bay is good for upgradability. What would you suggest for that? No plex usage. Thanks.

As mentioned above for just storage of photos/files, a cheaper ARM based cpu NAS is plenty fine, they tend to have less RAM too bringing the costs down. Sure the software may not be a snappy, but if all you're doing is using it as an external storage, or some place to sync your phone's photos to it shouldn't be a huge problem. If you want new, a Terramaster F4-212 is in the $225 range or so, you could go with a Qnap TR-004 in the same price range but that's a DAS not a NAS, sales do fluctuate on them all the time though if you don't mind waiting for prices. Another option which I probably would go for, is to look for a used NAS on any of the marketplace sites out there Craigs,Faceb, Ebay, etc. then you have a larger range of options, i.e. just looking at my local Craigslist I see a Synology ds416j for $150 which by today's standards is quite junky but again if you're just storing stuff... just make sure to avoid any ones that have the Intel Atom C2000 series of processors.

is it better to buy one of these or build an ITX NAS setup?

Bought one for this price last year. Immediately purchased a license for UNRAID and replaced the internal boot drive (a small USB thumb drive) with a thumb drive that I formatted with the UNRAID OS.

At that point, you don't ever have to deal with Terramaster OS, and you get the benefits of UNRAID which include parity drive support to recover lost data, and the ability to run any app that can run in a Docker, e.g., PLEX for your media streaming needs. The CPU supports ~ 4 simultaneous quick encodes of 4k 265 media enabled by Intel Quick Sync. I think the consensus among PLEX users is that these Intel CPUs are preferable to a dedicated graphics card because of the Quick Sync.

About the only downside I have been made aware of is the potential for the thumb drive boot device to crap out after a high, high number of read/writes. Certainly a possibility, and I have actually held off on using the box for anything but storage until I fully work out the setup in UNRAID to minimize traffic on the boot drive. It's doable but I need to study up.

Otherwise, this box has been up and running 24/7 for about 6 months with zero issues. Data is intact, and it is accessible over my network through the web interface. Smooth sailing.

Can you boot from one of the NVME drives? I'd love to run TrueNAS on this thing.
I have N150/32GB DDR4/500GB Beelink mini PC connected with Terramaster USB 3.2 Gen2 DAS

Purchased both little under $350 about 3 months ago and working great with my TrueNAS.

Not sure. Like I said, I need to do more research to make sure I understand which path makes the most sense for my use case. I think there might be access to the mainboard BIOS, but I just haven't gone there. Good luck!

NAS setups in general are overpriced.
I got a 8Bay JBOD unit maybe 10 years ago for $220, and that is also a option for people. It should be a bit cheaper today, considering the new connections its not so low in price.

But for NAS, I have Synology and its a 5 Bay unit. Its pretty slow, and always running writing non stop, and its also about $800+!
hile cube computers with more power are in the $90-120 region. In my opinion this is $200 overpriced.
I would NOT buy a NAS, when you can use a PC case and stuff all the HHD you want with SSD drives, with ALL the ram and FreeNAS or the other OSes you want for under $300.

I know, this is ready to go, and yes, that is where your money goes...Convenience, which should be a value at first, but not when its already been done. The idea is intangible, and we are paying through the nose for it on a yearly bases, vs 1st year intro. IMO.
