If you believe the rumors, a new model will be released in the September - December timeframe

Rumors have said one is coming out in 6 months…but they've also said that for 2+ years…

Absolutely correct. I have a 4TB HDD plugged into my ASUS router's USB port and shared out across the network. Using the VLC App, it is automatically detected as a shared drive and allows remote watching of movies and TV shows I have stored on it. It works so nicely with the AppleTV.
That being said, if you prefer/need the capability of physically plugging a drive into the TV to watch your content, you may be able to do so with one of your TV's USB ports natively (It's hit or miss depending on brand, model and year of the TV and what formats it supports). -OR- they sell cheap Android/GoogleTV boxes on Amazon that can do this by plugging in directly (Nvidia Shield used to be my preferred box until I figured out how to make it work with the network share to my AppleTV lol).

I've been waiting and not buying this version because the A15 doesn't support AV1 hardware decoding (software). I'm still running a gen 1 ATV4K and it's running as my Home hub .

Next version should have more RAM and newer processor.
