This is essentially a 5900XT for $60 more. Not sure why somebody would buy this when the performance is so close.
The old 5900X was 12 core but AMD released the XT that is 16 core.

Hard to justify vs the combo 5900xt deal but may be worth it for some to have the fastest 16 core possible on AM4 as a final upgrade.

I've had this cou and it works great. Got it paired with 32gb 4000 memory. Gets a little hot when benched. Make sure you check volts in bios. I have mine locked to 1.25v.

This is coming from a 5950X owner, return it ASAP and get the 5900XT. It's still 16 cores, just ~150mhz slower. It overall will be better and slightly easier to cool. Only time I have an issue with temps is single threaded workloads. ~150mhz less should be less to cool. All core workloads hit the 147w socket limit anyway so clocks get throttled a bit there, and temps are perfectly fine. Use that money saved and get a good AIO cooler.

Already in the case, just waiting on the 9060 16GB, should be here later today.

If I was thinking ahead I should have gone AM5 but I had components from a PC that took some water in the Hurricane last year.

Thought I could use the CPU since the memory was good, upon inspection looks like some water made its way into 2 rows of pins on the 3900X. I had already ordered a B550 so rather than risk it I grabbed what I thought was the best bang for the buck at the moment.

Strangely the 2 M.2 NVME drives were completely submerged for at least an hour and they cleaned up and worked fine in an external enclosure but I opted to buy a new for the OS.

I'll just wait till late next year when the AM5 prices come down and the new RT FS5, should be enough BF deals to put together an affordable box.

Just a warning, as I have this CPU on one of my PCs... this thing gets HOT. Very hot. You have to remember, this is a near production quality CPU. It's barely a home consumer CPU it's so beastly. You cannot put a cheap $30 fan on it. It will overheat. I ended up having to add some $140 All-in-one liquid/fan cooling solution to keep the heat under control, otherwise I just undervolted it slightly to underclock it til I got a better fan. I am not kidding, I'd push it to 105C where it would auto-shut down as a safety mechanism, with a fairly beefy fan on it.

This was not just my CPU that was binned poorly. This is a known issue with production level CPUs like Threadrippers. You need production level fan support to keep up.

So, just keep that in mind when considering this CPU.

It's not that hard to keep cool. There are good $40-45 air cooling solutions like the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 140.

Something is wrong somewhere with your setup, either the heatsink is not contacted with the cpu properly or airflow is incorrect. My 5900x runs fine with good thermals using a $35 thermalright air cooler and this chip is hotter than the better binned 5950x according to many reviews.

Yeah I agree. Also you can adjust the PPT and other power settings in the bios and tune it according to what your cooler can handle. I'd also like to point out nobody should do an all core OC, do not disable PBO. Disabling it removes the power limits and the CPU can overheat during benches or other stressful tasks.

This is a 5950, not the 5900. It's different.
