You need an "L" visa, unless you are transiting to a 3rd country. They did lower the visa fee for Americans, and the visa is good for 10 years.

United flies direct from sfo to pek, cost more but takes 14 hours comparing to Cathay's 20+ hours. Worth it imo

The "American Chinese" food is from Southern China. Go to Hong Kong if you want something familiar and English (as it was British for some time). Just like Italy, regions affect cuisine greatly. As for friendliness, no foreign countries really like dumb American tourists. Learn more about them and their language, and people settle better. Even people coming to the US can get the cold shoulder if they are in certain cities that are less inviting.

It's not accessible and you get culture shock big time (got it in India even though everyone did speak English). Thailand was mixed bag for us, loved the smaller cities, hated Bangkok (every one was out to scam you here).

First time E. Asia travelers recommend: Japan, Singapore, Taiwan

Unless you go with a local or a tour
