You need an "L" visa, unless you are transiting to a 3rd country. They did lower the visa fee for Americans, and the visa is good for 10 years.
people go to other country to taste authentic local food, but you are looking for "American Chinese". This is funny 🤣
That's right, China is truly an amazing destination to travel to IF you can either speak and read Chinese, or travel with someone who can. Virtually everything is done on WeChat and without it you will find it hard to eat out, find transportation, and book tickets. It is rare to find English speaking locals, not like other asian countries where everyone speaks some English. I was lucky enough to go with family, who had local friends in all the cities we visited, and it was amazing, best trip of my life, 10/10 food was able to try so many new things, amazing historical sites. Without them I would have been completely lost. One tip, they did not let me eat the street food, which is what makes most foreigners sick, also only drink bottled water but most people know this. Also the bigger museums and and attractions might have english signs but they are broken translations pumped into google translate.

If you can go with a local or hire a guide I would definitely recommend it, just stay respectful of the rules as you would in any country, don't take pictures of things that you think you shouldn't (like military sites or equipment for example) and keep an open mind for the local cuisine. If you go as only English speakers, without plans and just try to wing it, you will be sorely dissappointed.

United flies direct from sfo to pek, cost more but takes 14 hours comparing to Cathay's 20+ hours. Worth it imo

What's the visa requirement now for US travelers. Isn't there some kind of special shopping visa they introduced recently?

Visa-free if visiting 10 days or less.

Better not have any trace of illegal drugs in your system before you fly.
I don't see how is that a bad thing

Requires transit in China onward to 3rd country. This does not qualify.

Went to Bejing many years ago. Worst trip. People there are very unfriendly, and their temples and historical buildings were not kept up like Thailand (which are beautiful). Nothing is in English and you have to be pretty bold to try the food as it isn't like "American Chinese" food. Maybe it's changed in the last 20 years. Just our experience.

Had the same experience going to Scotland.

The "American Chinese" food is from Southern China. Go to Hong Kong if you want something familiar and English (as it was British for some time). Just like Italy, regions affect cuisine greatly. As for friendliness, no foreign countries really like dumb American tourists. Learn more about them and their language, and people settle better. Even people coming to the US can get the cold shoulder if they are in certain cities that are less inviting.

It's not accessible and you get culture shock big time (got it in India even though everyone did speak English). Thailand was mixed bag for us, loved the smaller cities, hated Bangkok (every one was out to scam you here).

First time E. Asia travelers recommend: Japan, Singapore, Taiwan

Unless you go with a local or a tour
