For those concerned about the heat issue (described more in detail here: https://www.reddit.com/r/MiniPCs/...esign_mod/), there are ways to 3D print a stand to include a fan. For example: https://www.printables.com/model/...-g9-cooler

Or this one: https://www.printables.com/model/...-g9-modkit

Great idea! I'd love to build a NAS using this platform. Since you have one of these things, can you tell me if it supports in-band ECC? Some N100 devices could sacrifice some memory capacity & performance for IBECC, and it would be configured in the firmware/BIOS.
Afaik it doesn't support ibecc

Hey guys I'm trying to get a little PC to hook up to my TV in the living room so I can watch media like youtube without the ads. But I don't want to spend much. Currently I'm using a 4k google TV dongle. I figured I could get a really cheap mini PC and hook that up to it. Anyone got any recommendations?

In 2025 The Shield TV Pro is still the best answer. Put Smart Tube on it for YouTube.
Then, you've got options for other, legally obtained media. The simplest would be connecting a USB Hard Drive to it.
The next step up would be a NAS Device.
Another step up would be a Media Server. Which, can do all sorts of stuff. Maybe even rip and encode your BRs right on it.

However you slice it, the Shield is still the best. Especially, because of it's up sampling.

Set up SmartTube. I did that for my Google TV and also my Google 4k dongle like 2 months ago; it works flawlessly.

$20 for the Walmart Onn TV box. It can do everything you need and even emulate games if you choose. Don't waste your money on anything else.

The Shield is $150 when Onn TV boxes are $20 and can do 95% of what the Shield can do. The remaining 5% is for gaming and the Onn is no slouch.

So the Onn TV box has all the same apps that google TV has and can do 4k?Really the only reason I'm doing it is to be able to use a browser to watch youtube so I can block the ads.

Would this make for a better Kodi streaming box than the Shield? I'm not familiar what audio formats it might support.
Granted, I have 2 Shield Pros already but it seems like this would run faster. It would just be a luxury purchase and I was thinking it would also make for a ready made DVR for Kodi

It should work for that but I'd recommend going with something else for that use. As far as I can tell they are genuine Intel.

If you go that route, I strongly encourage you to do some sort of cooling mod. This isn't a *sense writeup but also describes some of the overheating issues and a possible solution: https://ivoras.substack.com/p/1-m...tec-nucbox

Personally, I'd get some other system without cooling issues (e.g., https://www.amazon.com/Beelink-La...B0C339KVH9). This G9 has its uses due to the 4 NVMe slots, but there are other better options if you don't need that many slots.

I don't think this is a good price: only 12 GB DDR5 ram. What is 64GB EMMC used for?
I like the PD USB-C, WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2

I don't mind sharing as long as others don't mind. Any PSU would work with a jumper, they're cheap or you can diy, my PSU is just a spare 500w I had lying around. I just figured things out as I went along so I'm not expert. Honestly now I would probably get a Beelink ME mini for $209 from their site since it has better cooling and 6 nvme slots.
Could you explain what you mean by jumper for the psu? I have an old evga 600w psu that i was thinking about using to power external drives but am unsure what the jumper portion of your comment means.

It's a good price for what it is -- an efficient, low power system with 4 NVMe slots and dual 2.5 LAN ports. There just are not many mini PC alternatives that have similar specs. It does have cooling issues, however. Those are solvable but it's not a plug and play type of computer for most people. I'd recommend many people get something else if they don't need that many NVMe slots. As an all-flash NAS, it's not a bad little system (if you address the cooling issues).

That 64GB EMMC would be great as the boot drive for some version of Linux. It'd be perfect for something like TrueNAS.

Imo Intel is old advice. There were issues with 1Gbps Realtek chips but the 2.5Gbps Realtek chips are better than Intel. I think it was I-225V I had some quirky issues on opnsense where I had to hard power off to get the NIC to appear (soft reboots weren't enough)

I wouldn't suggest a Windows PC for a Media Center. The 4k Google TV Dongle would be worlds better. Windows HDR is just hot garbage. You should probably give this a try https://smarttubeapp.github.io/ instead.
He wants to watch YouTube without ads, you need a browser running in Windows/Linux to easily do that. How can you do that with a Google TV dongle?
