1) The resolution on all of these cheap projectors is closer to 720p. Good enough for a movie night, but not for viewing any sort of documents.
2) It is only usable in almost complete darkness, so plan accordingly, especially if you plan to use it outdoors.
3) Keystone adjustment is a REALLY useful feature in any projector if you are not mounting it perfectly level. That's what allows you to correct the vertical screen angles, and get that nice rectangular picture if your projector is placed low or high.
4) All these cheap projectors have abysmal speakers, so expect to use them with a sound bar or a speaker of some sort for good sound. It makes a huge difference for your movie watching experience.
5) My projector doesn't have Bluetooth, but it seems like it could be a useful feature, since you could pair a projector with a Bluetooth speaker and have more flexibility in where to place the speaker. Just keep in mind that Bluetooth connection can introduce some lag, and cause video and audio to be a bit out of the sink. Make sure you use a streaming device that can compensate for this lag if necessary.
Its not worth cheaping out when it comes to projectors.
Frankly it sounds like you and these other people have different use cases and expectations. And FWIW they seem to understand exactly what $50 buys if they have bought similar and have been pleased with the performance. Not everyone buys a Huffy expecting to drive at highway speeds with cruise control and A/C, if you did, that is your error, not theirs.
My personal experience with $40 projectors: They are great for backyard movie nights, entertaining kids, connecting to retro handhelds, basic presentations to small groups, using as an impromptu monitor, etc. And if they break during transport or get rained on because your kids forget it outside, so what, you buy another one for $40. But yes, if you are expecting IMAX at home in your $50,000 home theater room, you may be disappointed with the performance. No need to mansplain that to anyone else though, we understood that from the get-go

I could really use some help finding that elusive $30 coupon! š° I mean, I'd be totally fine with paying $70 but come on, I'd much rather pay that $40 price tag! š I'm logged into Walmart and checked out the seller's page, but I'm coming up empty!

I agree with the overall message of "Don't waste money on something cheap that is barely going to do what it's advertising it can do and instead invest your money in a solid purchase." I loved my $50 projector when I owned 0 projectors and had no frame of reference. As soon as I upgraded to a new projector, my old one essentially became a $50 dust collector because I would never go back to that crappy thing ever again.
Is a cheap projector better than nothing? Yes. Is it inherently a good investment because of that? No.

Nah, not really. An automobile is a significant necessity for most in America, whereas projectors are luxury items. The one in this post and other cheaply-made products are trying to capture the swath of the consumer market that's hoping to break into this luxury bracket but don't wish to fully pay what it's worth (at their detriment, of course). That's not to say that the consumers shouldn't have access, but I promise you that it's so much more worth it to get an entry-level model even if its just for children, cats, or casual use due to the enhanced level of features, honest components, and build quality.
I concede that the build quality and technology has come a long way (thanks, Moore's Law!) but we're still not at the point where we can have mass consumption of proper bare-bones projection components for this low of a price.
Sure, you'll get colours and an image projected onto a wall, but it's not much more than a novelty. I can totally see a use case for temporary projection of decorations or colours to enhance a party, etc. (because in those cases the exaggerated and BSed product details don't matter) but surely that's obvious, and then we're back into this argument of fast tech and soon-to-be landfill fodder.
If considering, I highly recommend the video another person on this thread posted from youtube content creator "The Hook Up" who does many series on various projector models. He absolutely excellent and has an incredible wealth of knowledge of various classes of projection tech.
Yes, you get what you pay for. The specifications for any projector from a company not in the projector business at least 15 yrs will be pulled from a dark hole where people usually sit. If they use any terms for brightness besides "ANSI Lumen" then they aren't using any standard for measurement and can make up anything they like. From a marketing perspective, they've learned that bigger numbers lead to more sales. None of these cheap projectors do 500 ANSI Lumens. Around $250, there's really only one Chinese factory making projectors that are much brighter, but also much louder - like 85dB. I had one. Measured it. It lasted 13 months before dying.
I've had Optoma ML550 and Epson 1080 projectors. No comparison between those and the cheap models. Being bright isn't everything. Having correct colors matters as does not having artifacts on the edge of the screen.
If you can control the light in the room, the 550 ANSI Lumen was fine for a cheap, quality projector. Bought the Epson used for $500 and don't regret that purchase.
Be careful when these cheap Chinese projectors make claims about "supporting XYZ resolution". All that matters is the "Native Resolution", since that will be what is thrown to your wall.
While connectivity using wifi and BT might seem like a good idea, it really isn't. It is just another door for tracking and being hacked. You want an HDMI connection into the projector. And you should never use any built-in speakers. They all suck. Plan on a soundbar or receiver connection.
Nearly all projectors are made in China, but the quality projector companies address features, quality control, replacement lamps, cooling and fan noise. You really want a projector to be as quiet as possible. Few actually are, but if you can get one 35dB or less, count yourself lucky. Fans are necessary, since a bright projector will use a lamp that heats up greatly, even the LED projectors have this issue.
If a projector doesn't have a replacement lamp, then it is a throw away device - usually after 20K-50K hours of use. That might seem like a bunch, but be certain to check so you KNOW what the expected lifetime is (cheap Chinese makes will all claim really lone lifetimes, but since the company will be gone next year, they don't have to honor any of those claims. Well, the company will change names by 1 character, but be all the same people. They've learned this trick.
OTOH, my Epson projector has replacement bulbs available for much less money than all the competitors I looked at. It was a key reason why I chose to get the Epson projector. Lamps run from $60-$400, so beware. Typical lamp lifespan is 5000 hours. That's watching a movie every day for about 4 yrs.
Ah, and if you want to game on your projector, then you'll want at least 1080p resolution. Less resolution means those guides/maps that many games put in a corner won't be readable.
Anyway, get a cheap projector as a way to learn and try it out without risking $600-$4000. We removed all our TVs and only have projectors now. Going back to a screen smaller than 120inches just seems tiny to us. I remember the days when 20in screens were huge. Those days are gone.

The comparison they are making is completely ignorant and nonsensical. They are missing the points entirely. I'm not sure what awakened the insecurity within them leading to such lengthy rants as though someone just insulted their children.
I didn't read most of the drivel, but I can see the they are the clear expert here because all their accusations are clearly ā¦ projection.
