tick and mosquito spraying

I know most SDers are knowledgeable about saving bucks and doing things that actually work. We've got another ticky, mosquitoey NJ summer and a few of us have already been bitten and going through tick medication.
Has anyone ever used mosquito shield and had a decent experience? I feel like an idiot shelling out $600 for a summer but I don't want to spray myself and I don't want to poison the dogs.

I recently saw a tic tok about using a mosquito bucket. Essentially it's a 5 gallon bucket half way filled up with water. You then add a mosquito dunk to it, so when the mosquito lays it eggs, the larvae dies. There was also a cover on it with holes so that mosquitos can get in but animals can't. Google Mosquito bucket of doom for more info.
I do not have a solution for ticks other than keep the grass short.
