40L is under nearly every rectangular volume allowed on NA and EU carriers. I've had one for about a year and a half now, and I *can* pack it so full it won't fit in the overhead, but unless I decide to overstuff it and add my shoes in the outside pockets, it is a perfect fit for nearly every jet built in the past 30 years and turboprops like the ATR72. In the latter is where I encountered the "too full" pack option, though I was packed for a 4+ week Christmas trip. In an Embraer 145 it fits perfectly in an overhead, if admittedly taking up an entire overhead. In a Airbus 32x Neo it fits like a glove with the long dimension = the depth of the overhead bin and the width = height of the bin, so multiple Farpoint/Fairviews can stack like sideways pancakes.

If you're of tall or stout build (I'm 6' 200#) nobody blinks twice letting you on while all the wheelies have to get checked. OTOH, if you're smaller (wife is 5'1 on a tall day) you might get some side glances, and once she was even informed she had to check her bag despite my walking through with essentially the same pack and not a single word. If you do have to stow it, the zip-up back flap that covers the shoulder straps and hip belt makes for a smooth, nearly snagless profile for automated luggage handling safety.

NOTE: if you're not an organization fiend like me, and want a daypack/underseat "personal" item, I'd spend the extra $40 and get the 55L Version [amazon.com]. That's a 40L Farview with a 15L daypack that is designed to piggyback, strapping in place quite nicely - though it does move the center of gravity of the system a bit far back. Definitely a traveler walking to a hotel/hostel configuration and not an Appalachian Trail through hiker rig. The downside to the 15L is that is has limited internal organization pockets - not quite as bare bones as a stuff pack (not by a long shot) but you're not going to get 16 built in pouches and pockets like you will with something like the Everki Studio [everki.com], but it's a might bit less expensive too. The differences in the 40L vs 40L that comes with the 15L pack are mainly that the laptop sleeve is in the 15L, leaving more room in the main pack. I think there may be one other difference...but it escapes me at the moment.

Anyway, after a dozen or so trips across the US and Europe, I give this pack top marks.

To each their own. My last pack was a Kelty 2000 - a $150 pack I got for free for test driving an Isuzu(?) back around 2001 or so. I retired it as my primary pack in 2022 after it was my one-bag for a three week, around-the-world trip. The interior surface coating started failing and I came back with bits of the pack lining falling off. Note that, on asking Kelty about their lifetime warranty, I was informed that 20 years was a long time and I'd certainly got my money's worth so they wouldn't be replacing it, but offered me a 10% off coupon on any full priced pack in their web store. I will not be purchasing another Kelty, and I hope Osprey stands behind their equipment in the future.

that backpack literally cost u less than $7 a year for 22 years and u wanted a refund or a brand new backback at the end for regular wear and tear

edit: it cost you nothing, you got it free for doing a test drive

The Osprey Fairview is also on sale, which is the women's equivalent for this backpack. It is virtually the same as the Farpoint except the straps are a bit shorter, hip strap rides a little higher and has a slightly different contour.

That's just stupid - get an aliexpress pack for $10 and save another $20 if all you care about is being cheap. You got ripped off!

We have five of these in my family, not because of the warranty (which is great) but because these bags are so comfortable when carrying a heavy load, esp walking on the cobblestones of Europe.

From looking at the price history, it gets down to $120 often so no need to rush on this.

Yes, but it wasn't wear and tear. The lining coating actually failed - as first I though it was sand until I rubbed the fabric and little bits came off on my hand. The pack was otherwise in good condition if I didn't mind all of my stuff getting coated with little black bits. This isn't my next door neighbor who fixed my lawnmower and now the spark plug is fouled because he set the mix too rich. A corporation with $50M in annual sales may decide to shirk their warranty commitment, I suppose, but 10% off on a full-cost pack would still cost me more than the typical cost at a retailer. That's just rude, imho.

Wife and (adult) daughter both do. Used on flights on Ryan Air as a personal/underseat without issue.

This bag survived multiple 2-week trips in Europe and a rough 9-week backpacking trips in Asia, and years later it still looks in great condition. It's surprisingly comfortable having to lug it on your back for relatively long distances (under a mile in my case). If you know how to pack things tightly you can truly get about 6 days worth of summer clothes in it along with toiletries. I was able to bring it onboard long-haul flights and short-haul international flights without issue. The only times I checked it was when I knew I was overweight for some international LCC's or didn't want to bother with carrying it on. This is an excellent bag for somebody hostel hopping or wanting something back-friendly vs a rolling suitcase.

I also disagree. Never had a problem flying domestically in the US. I one-bagged a trip in Asia with this bag. With the backpack straps zipped down under the back flap, the Asian airlines didn't blink. Wear it as a backpack whie boarding and you'll likely never have a problem, IMO (unless they're weighing the bag, then you might have problems.

Biggest downside of this bag.

I spent virtually all of 2023 travelling, and I insisted on doing it with just this and the Osprey Daylight (15L). NGL, it worked quite well, but in hindsight, it would have been better to add a large check-in, especially for the longer stays.
