I have a VPN. Last week I changed my location to Brazil after seeing it online somewhere and got a year for ~$8. I think South Africa is good too from what I remember.

This was without a sale

Yes. That's what I do.
1) Cancel your auto-renew now
2) Set a calendar reminder for when it expires
3) Set up a Slickdeals alert for Alltrails
4) After expiration, your account will still be active without the premium features. If you don't need those features immediately, wait for this sale to come around -- which happens roughly every 3 months.
5) When you're ready to renew, use a VPN to visit the website from Brazil. You'll get a super cheap price. If you have one, use a credit card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees. If you've waited for the sale code to come around, it'll work and that price will be even cheaper.

I've run across confused hikers a few times on the trail who were trying to make sense of the app map or not getting a signal. Easy to carry a small topo map that will never fail one. Also adding a compass will absolutely solve one's problem. My former gf would argue with me on a return trek with telling me the wrong direction. When on an unknown little used or secondary trail, I'll leave trail markers to confirm the return hike. Could be a small rock stack, arrow in the dirt, and once I used small branches. Nothing worse than hiking the wrong way back after discovering a mistake. Been there.

Does anyone know if this includes the ability to upload a GPX file? I see they've added "Build your own routes" to the Peak subscription at $79.99/yr. I usually subscribe once a year to AllTrails but that's a steep price to load GPX files when Gaia exists.

In case you do not have paid VPN in Brazil: any free in-browser VPN extension with connection to any EU country allows you to switch to Poland as a billing country. With that price is PLN 34.99 (about 10 USD)

Using India as VPN location can bring the price even lower than Brazil but may need Indian credit/debit card

This is good advice. My alltrails expires in November. I will try this then.

These are good tips, but that's also why I use this AllTrails+ and not the free version. Alltrails+ let's you download the trails before you leave the house so it's not reliant on a signal. If I start to go off-route, my watch buzzes and warns me to get back on trail. It's saved my bacon many times, including places like Death Valley where you cannot get a mobile signal. My only beef is that there are many trail routes that aren't on AllTrails yet. It relies a lot on UGC. There are also a lot of hikes that are redundant (different versions/routes/portions of the same trail without consistent naming/labeling) which can make it confusing to find the right one. Just spent a month in Catalonia and a lot of routes weren't in there.
I back both of these takes up. Using Pro with downloadable maps is great. Going off-trial in Joshua Tree there are hikes that are pretty much impossible without GPS, and Alltrails with an offline map with GPS is perfect with that. On the other hand, it can mislead you, just like your car GPS can. And you can over-rely on it.

The key is to take a paper map and a compass with you as a backup no matter what. Don't assume the Alltrails map is definitely correct. In the same way I always keep a paper map in my car in case my phone dies.

Every now and then I'll go on a hike using a map and compass alone, just to keep my skills with it fresh. I might keep my phone in my pocket running Alltrails to buzz me if I go the wrong way or get lost, but I actually prefer to go with the map and make it impossible to double check my work so I really stay practiced.

If you want an offline basemap without paying for AllTrails, download the free Organic Maps.

I went to Brazil, bought VPN, then went to India, opened VPN, set browser to private, disabled adblock.
Then downloaded Organic Maps.

Why dont you just download the GPX(And so many other format) file from AllTrails for free and save it to your watch that way?
I see one of the format is Garmin Course TCX and Garmin Course CRS, I dont have garmin but I am assuming this can be saved directly on the garmin smart watch, for apple watch I use one time pay app called workoutdoors, it also have ability to import GPX files, and you can follow the map on your watch and you can customize the app to buzz if you go off route.
