For the same price as a Switch 2, it's a great deal. Only drawback with the ROG Ally is its battery life. I've had the Z1 Extreme Ally since close to its launch date in 2023, but as someone who likes to not have battery anxiety, I don't use it as much as I used to, and tend to prefer Android handhelds like my Odin 2 Portal or more recently my Switch 2. The Ally is one of the most powerful PC handhelds out there, so if you use Turbo mode you can get some CRAZY performance out of it. It's incredible in that regard. It's also comfortable, has great controls, supports VRR, 120hz, and for a non-OLED has great colors and surprisingly decent black levels. It's overall a much better screen than the Switch 2's. You can even throw on SteamOS or dualboot Windows and Bazzite if you'd prefer to not strictly use Windows (but the major benefits of Windows is native Game Pass support and its ability to play games that use anti-cheat). Really, the only thing that holds it back is its battery life, which is resolved with the more expensive Ally X.

^ Windows does suck.
Replace it with Bazzite or SteamOS. Dual boot for Game Pass / non-steam.

Is this refurbished? If it's brand new, I'd say go for it. I LOVE my ROG Ally from previous NFM deal (BB price matched). Just managed to get the free case today. It was a huge hassle because the free case never popped up when I bought mine online. They are sending me a 40 dollar gift card via mail. We're back at 1950's... LOL Did a 4TB NVME upgrade, 74Wh battery upgrade (it's a must!), Skull & Co grip case (outstanding case by the way), and I'm just ginning ear to ear when I play this thing on my trips / commuting. I've been gaming on this a lot more than I do on my 9800X3D + 5090 PC. At 15W power mode, on battery, if you tweak the settings just right, this thing is a monster of a gaming handheld and the battery can last several hours (the 74Wh one that is). Can't believe I haven't pulled the trigger earlier than now. It's that good, and so much fun. The 7 inch screen is amazing with VRR - 1080p games look fantastic, 900p resolution is a good compromise between frame rate and battery power, throw some FSR and Frame Gen and you're all set. Plays Gears of War 5 at 1080p just fine with very nice texture settings, Forza Horizon 5 900p is really good too, 93 fps on the benchmark. DBZ Sparking ZERO is a another great performing game in 900p. Ghosts of Tsushima too runs great 900p. Gaming at 720p looks a bit too blurry for my liking. Emulators are awesome too. This thing runs laps on the MSI Claw Ultra 7 I had gotten from Target a few weeks ago. What a terrible handheld that one. Retuned it a couple of weeks ago.I really want to install whatever Microsoft is cooking for the new Xbox ROG Ally X on my ROG Ally. This is going to be a gamechanger for all Windows powered handhelds.
I second this. It's a great piece of hardware for the right audience. But you have to balance your desires and expectations. The fact that you can play AAA games on this is incredible but several perform best when in Turbo Mode (plugged in) which is a huge bummer for someone like me who likes to play on the couch but I have pets that enjoy running around so keeping it plugged in really isn't an option. At that point, I might as well be on my actual PC. Frame Gen and changing the settings helps for some games though so it was nice being able to finish God of War which performed nicely at 15w (about 1.5 hours battery life for that game).

This is a great handheld if you dump Windows and put SteamOS on it. Better performance than a Steam Deck. You will be missing the OLED but the screen on here is very good. I have had one of these for awhile and stopped using it as I got sick of dealing with Windows 11 but SteamOS has given it new life and I have been using it daily. Great deal at this price. My SD card slot still works fine over a year later but who knows with that one.

That and the fact that it fries SD cards.

I have thought about getting one of these for a while, but it is really hard for me who already owns a steam deck. Sure, ROG Ally is more powerful but most of the games I played on these devices are not 3A so it is likely no meaningful performance difference. I also don't play these games which require windows and anticheat stuff.
I was on that fence and pulled the trigger last time Best Buy had the sale. ROG Ally is night and day difference to the deck. No more crashes and compatibility issues, emulation is a cakewalk due to windows. Getting your steam , epic and gog libraries in one spot is clean and the power boost is worth it. Was gonna sell my deck but ended up giving to my son and he brings it everywhere so 2 happy boys!

lol yeah going on flash sale every week for 2 yrs will do that. Remember when it used to sell for like 700+?

A handheld you must play while plugged into the wall unless you play for just 30 minutes and a defective design requiring you to bypass the SD card slot by way of SSD upgrade on day 1 of ownership.

Just get a Steam Deck

Might as well pick up the gift card deal if you're gonna get this.

This or legion go for 499?
Personally recommend the Legion Go much more since the ALLY will fry the microSD

Although the legion go is much heavier and most people don't care about the detachable controls

I second this. My SD card slot fried without even using an SD card in it.
How long did it take for the SD card reader to stop working? Any guess the amount of hours you played before it died?
