Most air purifiers will tell you the quality in each room. Maybe worth $20 imo.

While I agree, there's not much available in the market because it's smart. I use it to run automation such as my humidifier, smart plug'd vornado heater, and not-smart-but-still-effective Winix C535 retrofitted with a switchbot. Extra, sure, but it helps my older folks during winter save money for the convenience of never having to get up

I kinda want one but I don't want to buy devices that are reliant on proprietary protocols. Are there alternatives that are more smarthome friendly?

I have one made by "Breathe" that connects to an app and does a pretty good job. The first one I bought would not dim the display when you were not moving (so it was like sleeping with the light on, super bright all night)- motion sensor was bad. But support was great and replaced it quickly without fuss. But that one was $100.

Well.. if people already have the z-wave/zigbee network established, adding a zigbee air quality monitor is only around $15-$20 each... controlling smart and non-smart device through the z-wave/zigbee hub is easy too... Of course, a lot of us already in kind-of amazon eco-system so adding this is easy but I still dont see the high price tag point of it compare to other products with the same functionality and in also very popular platform.

Apparently it works with the Alexa Media Player (custom integration), but people complain about it breaking often.

Also, separately, note that it does CO and not CO2.

There're some zigbee air monitor devices available in the market and zigbee is an open source protocol. One thing I want say is i never own zigbee air monitor device as i don't really need one of it.. most of of my AC/heater/air purifier already have their detector/controller and don't need another one. Therefore, I don't have any experience of the quality of these devices.

I have a really cool one with a beautiful display I got from Ikea. I looked at this before but it annoyed me that it has no display. I also have a couple of Dysons and they show the air quality on them.
