What are people doing in their cars that is leaving odors so strong that it requires a can of chemicals to neutralize? I mean, even when I leave a bag of half-eaten McDonalds in my car overnight, I just drive with the windows rolled down for a bit and it's gone.
Cigarette smoke.

I use these and like the smell of these, think of it as an air freshener, it doesn't remove the origin of odors. Also, I think it lasts maybe about a month if you don't roll the windows down.

I really don't like the application method because it requires you to keep your car ac on at full blast for 10 minutes so that it circulates into the cabin. To me it's just a waste of gas but to each their own. Would I buy it? Yeah, maybe just one for backup.
I agree - it's a waste of fuel. Why couldn't one use a small desktop electric fan to circulate the air with the engine off?

because the fan won't get the chemicals into the inner piping and coils where bacteria can hide and multiply.

... Kinda. It will do what it says, but it's layering odor with chemicals. Best option is an ozone treatment, which most detailers now have. Ozone attaches to odor, kills some of it, and then decays to oxygen. So it won't add to the stew.
Good idea, I have an ozone machine I only use for rental homes

I wonder if this would work in a small room that has cigar smoke?

I had my car detailed a while ago and I would have certainly bought the Ozone treatment except the detailer was very candid to me "Do you smoke? No? Ozone is a waste of money"

Ozone will only damage your interior if you are running it constantly for extended periods of time. A single session to kill some bad smells isn't going to do any real damage. You can shock sanitize your car with a cheap ozone machine. Even the $25 ozone machines on amazon will be more than enough for a space as small as a car or truck. Leave your car running and AC at full blast. Setup the ozone machine and let it run for an hour. Turn it off, open the windows and leave the AC running for another 10 minutes. You may smell ozone byproducts in the vehicle for a few days but that will go away.
can you recommend one of those ozone machines? I have issue with my '02 Sequoia. I bought it used and the AC system got a smell. I use the Lysol, bleach and water through the vent outside nothing worked.

This one looks like it would probably work. I doubt it's anywhere near the advertised 20000mg/h but for a space as small as a car, you don't need it. Just promise you won't spend much time in the car with the thing running. Short-term exposure to ozone is harmless but long-term exposure leads to health issues. A machine like that shouldn't be capable of producing ozone in truly toxic concentrations.

If/whenever one of my cars gets that funky A/C smell, I turn on the A/C and fan full blast, put it on "outside air", and spray an entire can of Lysol into the intake (under the hood, in front of the windshield. Kills the shit that's causing the funk, and away you go!

Perfect example of people thinking they know everything -- We've had 6 kids and I'm in my 60's. Never needed this.

I had a Kia optima with AC issue.

I tried kit like this that circulate the chemical in the car. It did not help.

1. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/lMSuiyN0Ixk

Smell is coming from outside. You need to Clean A/C condenser.

I used Kia's Ac Condensor cleaning kit, but there are others. Basically, just like any AC, The water will produce and it need to leak out to the floor, it can get moldy. so you need to treat it.

Doing it only took me 20 minutes.

2. after tha change air filter.

3. Do not always run A/C in internal circulation. Run AC with external intake... and Full blast, at lowest temp for few minutes.

4. after cleaning the condesor, I would change cabin air fiter. super easy for most car. parts are lke under $10 on amazon.

Here is example kit from Toyota.

THIS IS HOW TO
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsjtXtJ0slU

YOU NEED TO GET THE KIT WITH HOSE. Plug in the hole and leave it in there for 10 minutes.. so chemical can do the job, and then drain it out.
