Passmark score is 9100, it has RDNA graphics which is decent and DDR5. It's not junk. Please stop spewing nonsense.

What a mess.. Why does graphics card need security updates it should be OSs responsibility.
Maybe to protect from malware trying to control system via GPU driver vulnerabilities, or attempting to mine crypto on the iGPU laugh out loud

Because it's basically a ryzen 3 with a ryzen 5 name. It's only a 4 core cpu. But what it has advantages in is RDNA graphics which is modern and receives regular updates. Ryzen 4000 Vega graphics has already been discontinued and they get 1-2 updates a year for basic security fixes and there's no guarantee there will be anymore GPU updates. I have heard with windows 11 that your GPU drivers need to be up to date otherwise certain features fail to work.
should we get a i3-1215u or ryzen 7530u

It's OK for the price, it does not have a SD card reader and the screen might be 1080p but it looks rather dim and washed out.

* I still haven't figure out why this Ryzen 5 7520U processor is less powerful than the Ryzen 5 4500U from 5 years ago???
Are you complaining that a $267 laptop with decent specs doesn't have even more?

Don't let anyone tell you the 7520U isn't a good CPU. Sorry it isn't some 12 to 20-core beast, but, for the price and as generously as this machine is equipped, it's a fine machine for watching videos, doing office work, kids, or grandparents. Just do yourselves a favor and put Linux on it. Stop pretending that you've got a workload that you absolutely need Windows for to run on this specific machine, folks. Anything that mission-critical probably shouldn't be run on a cheapo laptop, nor a refurbished laptop.

Zen 2 cores for those unfamiliar with the new confusing naming conventions.

I recommend looking for the 7545u. Zen 4 cores. Six of them. 2 performance and four efficiency cores. Much faster.

Still, the 7520 beats the crap out of the Intel N series, albeit with more battery drain.

I got this laptop from Acer's eBay store about a year and a half ago (mine only has a 512 GB SSD). It runs Linux Mint just fine "out of the box". Everything works fine, including the touchscreen, except that two finger scrolling in Firefox doesn't work "out of the box". I really wish it had backlit keys though.

Is this Costco laptop a better deal? I bought it last week and the keyboard and feel seems cheap. I primarily need a system for office and document processing. I was hoping to get something for under $600 with 32gb of ram and a 1TB SSD. It seems like those deals are gone now

Certainly not junk. Specs are just fine for the money. 95% of users would have no issues with it.

The Costco deal you posted would given you essentially this laptop for $100. But it would be new and from Costco. Both are beneficial. But the specs are virtually identical.

Question, can I ask why you are looking for 32gb or ram over the 16gb? More ram isn't inherently better. Sure if you are using large databases or spreadsheets. Or running a VM it could help. But it won't make the machine faster per se if you don't have a need.

Again you may have the need and I don't mean to criticize that. But I have found for the vast majority of user 16 gb is quite adequate. Put the money in a fast cpu. eBay has some vivobooks with Ryzen 7730's for under $400. That cpu is a little more that twice as fast as the 7520 in these machines.

Make sure you run Wayland instead of X11 for 2 finger swipe back or forward to work.

Scrolling with 2 fingers should work right out of the box.

I recommend TuxedoOS for KDE

I got my parents this very machine and it's working great for them as a living room laptop. Dad picks a TV channel, mom picks something on the laptop to look at. It's nice. They'll run windows until MS deems they don't deserve any more updates. Then maybe we look at Linux.

No complaints for their average browsing, video-ing and google meeting with family uses.
If anything, maybe the speakers could have been 30% louder at max volume. I might pick them up a chromebook since dad is not the sharpest windows user and I like the idea of knowing they get 10 years of security updates and less need for support from me.
