Just my experience: they sold me a bike with rust under the paint and gave me an explanation, that it is a "paint issue". Their warranty is like a joke.

Both the Intrepid and Univega Rover are alloy frames. Alloy frames don't really rust...

Yeah I noticed the deal on the Univega but the Intreprid got better quality parts and allows you to upgrade up some of them as well. But I guess for a really entry level Univega is the way to go?

Do NOT order through this company. I had the biggest headache of an online purchase ordering a bike for my wife. They sent me a bike that had a damaged fork. They sent me another one with the same issue. They then tried to send me just the fork and ended up sending me the wrong one.

Yes. I had to dispute a charge for two separate purchases from these guys. Do not give your money to them.

Can anyone comment on this bike and the rover that was linked up above?
Both my kids need new bikes. It will only be used for occasional mountain biking. Are these the best bikes for the price?

Mine just arrived and I assembled it. I am waiting for my chain lube to dry, but one ride around the block and I am happy with it. It is my first mountain bike; I usually ride a gravel / road bike.
For what its worth, this is the second bike I have purchased from Mendham and I have no complaints about the company. They sometimes have great steep discount codes. Previously I purchased an ebike from them for $260.
