Very disappointing that Garmin cancelled the altimeter feature from Vivoactive 5 (and 6). This was an important features of earlier Vivoactive watches.

Dang, Amazon keeps dropping the price...kind of kicking myself for buying it a month ago when it was $235...oh well, I guess I can rationalize the extra $40 I paid for an extra 4 weeks of use vs waiting? 🤣 Overall I love this smartwatch though, it's perfect for logging my runs, walks, lifts, indoor as well as outdoor cycling...it even can log/time breathwork/meditation sessions! Menu system is less intuitive than my old Google Pixel, but this one is far superior in every other way, especially battery life and the priceless ability to connect to a chest HRM strap (all wrist based HRMs suck in comparison). The customization and wealth of data when syncing with the Garmin Connect website is light years better than that stupid Fitbit app which requires a subscription if you want all the features.

I had a 3 and with the altimeter enabled, my starting elevation was always higher than my end elevation even though it was the same place. Disabling the altimeter and using GPS only resolved that, but GPS only misses the smaller elevation changes.

I think that the altimeter was used for counting stairs and steps.

I have had the 255 for almost a year. The one thing that has me thinking of changing is the inability to download the Spotify app. I can only pause and play podcasts not 15 second Skip.

What chest strap monitor are you using? You have that paired with this device?

I got the Forerunner 255 Music for just this reason! You can always use your earbuds/headphone controls for pause/skip/next song.

Was wondering this myself. I convinced my GF to buy the FR255 and then saw this. She's missing the touchscreen from her VA3 so I looked into the differences. Based on this reddit post I decided not to bother telling her the VA5 is on sale for the same price.

The screen is the big differentiator for me. I prefer the MIP screen of the FR255 because it results in much longer battery life with an always-on screen and is noticeably easier to read in the sun. I used an FR265 for three months back in 2023, and I sold it to go back to the FR255 that I'm still happily using. I also generally dislike touch screens on wearables because they tend to register unintended touches in bed or even in the shower, but I haven't tried one since the VA3, so it's possible they figured that out.

But if the benefits of an OLED/touch screen outweigh the drawbacks for your personal preferences, VA5 or FR265 would both be good models.

Yes, I use a Polar H9 when I'm at the gym so that their cardio machines will display it too, but at home or outside I use a Garmin Dual HRM.

May I ask which Garmin hrm you use?

How does the accuracy compare to the polar?
