Benefits of Sam's & BJs vs Costco is that they're usually closer to you, are emptier, Membership goes on sale, & they have Scan-and-go which saves you time.
Also, Costco tends to have mostly bulk (like, really big) quantities, whereas BJs you can get a reasonable size for a single person.
I think the answer to that is going to vary by person.
I have both memberships and share them with my dad.
He prefers BJ's and I prefer Costco.
The benefits to BJ's is that they are less crowded and don't make you buy in quite as much bulk as Costco.
For me Costco is a lot more convenient location-wise although it is always really crowded.
They both have competitive gas prices and an optical center.
If you get their credit card you can save 4-5% on gas but at BJ's the discount comes off instantly and at Costco you get it back in the form of an annual certificate.
BJ's doesn't have a food court like Costco.

Their app shows the gas prices for their stores (don't need a login for this). If you're getting the Club+ Membership it discounts 5 cents further than what the app shows (the pump price will reflect this when you enter the Club+ card).
Anyone confirm this? My membership expired a few months ago.
went to the BJ's in 11379 and was hard pressed to buy anything. their house brand Wellsley Farms has some good items, but i can get equal at my local Aldi or Lidl without having to bulk up. pretty much all the commercial brands were over priced at BJ even in bulk - I can get the same S&S cheaper on Amazon or sales at Target or local grocery store chains. the few discounts i saw were 10% off at most, and honestly who has time or patience to comb thru some phone app on the remote chance you stumble over some personalized "clippable coupon" to use. I feel sorry for anyone who had to pay $60 to join this bulk version of walmart with a bakery. I can appreciate if you live rural and you pass BJ's during your commute that this would be a great asset to you, but in a competitive grocer market like NYC, I suspect the two BJ's near me are loss leaders stuck as anchor tenants in spaces too expensive to buy out so they can put these places out of their misery.
