I had one since 2016 I've been using and I wasn't sure why it wasn't as effective. Looks like it does go bad after a while (I've been using the gel which is amazing). I'll grab another one of these and give it a stab.

This stuff really works. Got rid of an ant bed that kept returning year after year.
Same here. This is one of the only things I've ever used that worked. That cheap Ortho Home Defense spray kills on contact but they come back the next day anyway.
Been using this product for very small carpenter ants for years. It's a fantastic bait. I try to put it in areas that won't get washed away inside the drip line around the garage/home. Really didn't have any choice but to use some sort of toxin I guess I couldn't control them with boric acid. This is the best price I've ever seen!
I had tried just about every product I could find locally to get rid of some ants last year. Finally tried some Alpine WSG as recommended a few different places and the ants were gone within a day.
I got mine on sale last year from Home Depot, $14.99, so it's strange that they won't ship to CA.(LA County, 39 in stock when I checked just now)
Soooo, California does a couple things. Pesticides: you have to register/license with the state to sell. If the Amazon seller isn't licensed or registered in Cali, no can sell. For other things, CA forces sellers to pay fees (such as recycling for TV's, electronics or paint). If an Amazon seller doesn't pay this fee, they are not allowed to sell that TV, etc.

I noticed after you open the product, it only is effective for a few months. I buy it and spread it around my yard, then my parents yard.
