The big diff between this and the recent 5 L post is that the 5 L is vacuum insulated. If keeping on all day every day the vac one is a better deal. I have a 4 or 5 L but I have it set to turn on morning and off at 9AM. One annoying thing about these is that if not wanting to keep on 24/7 there is a timer, but it's a sleep timer. Click it for 6, 8, 10 hours when you go to bed - it's not really like American coffee maker that turns on at a certain time, rather it takes a nap for however long you click each day.

I was gonna say look at godzilla, but at this point, I don't know which chemical mutated the thing.

This is the response from Rufus (Amazon's AI chat bot):
The product information indicates that the inner liner of the Zojirushi Hybrid Water Boiler & Warmer has a non-stick coating containing PTFE, which is a material commonly used for non-stick coating in cookware and is FDA approved.

And for that reason, I'm out!

"PTFE can degrade and release potentially harmful fumes when overheated, above 260°C (500°F). This degradation can also lead to the release of microplastics and PTFE particles into food, especially from damaged or scratched cookware."

Good thing water doesn't reach those temperatures (unless in a supercritical state, which I doubt the Zoji can do).

We only use glass, stainless, carbon steel, cast iron in the kitchen, besides "fiesta" dishes. We never eat anything with an ingredients label of more than 3, and rarely eat out unless seed oil free. Only drink purified well water.

But zojirushi water boilers, and rice cooker are the only exceptions we make. Water only reaches 212 degrees max, and we've never seen any peeling or flaking in many years of use. I wish it was stainless, but the convenience out weighs eating out and eating processed foods. Choose your battle.

edit: I lied, we use a silicone spoon in the rice cooker to avoid scratching. Also, soak it in water before washing, dried rice and the included spoon will scratch it.

Otherwise I agree, avoid seed oils, plastics, processed foods, ptfe, enjoy the sun and exercise.

... And get the ones made in Japan

Getting one of these. If anyone is looking for a hot water boiler and thinks this costs too much, just make sure you don't get a zojirushi made in China. I have had 2 that failed the same way (badly manufactured heating element causes short that can't be repaired without damaging everything). I bought one for my parents that's made in Japan and it hasn't had the same issue. Trying one for myself now...

5L is a lot for any family, and not worth it in my opinion. We have a 4L CD-WCC40 I got March 2024 that we keep at 2.5L daily 24/7. Not keeping the water at 165F+ can be an issue when you keep the water in there 24/7.

Yes, max temp is 208F. All of that voodoo stated is just nil. My wife is Nihonjin, and there's nothing super special about Japanese made products. I'm not sure why that is a thing, we have no clue. I will state again that there is nothing superior about stuff being made in Japan. It's not special, it's not cool, it's just like making stuff in China. We also like seed oils though, so I guess we are just doomed.

I've had this model for many many years.. still as good as new. I run a cleaning cycle with descaling solution every 2-3 months but I'm not even sure it's necessary. The lid needs replacing every once in a while due to mineral build up and internal plastic crumbling into the water. They're not always in stock which can be annoying.

I've tried a bunch of cheaper brands on amazon. They seem to last a couple years at most before the electronic dispenser malfunctions or the internal tank rusts and springs a leak. The zoji is priced at a premium but it's outlasted the cheaper ones many times over.

Yeah but 200+ degrees daily can degrade the material over time even though it never hits 500 F. Imagine after a few years that Teflon starts breaking down unbeknownst to you. This is one of those things 20 years later, oops it does cause cancer after all.

Can it be used for anything other than water? Like hot cocoa or apple cider?
