Obviously the safest thing to do if you're planning on doing this is to root it during the return window on the off chance it bricks.

Do you use the kids space, or just a normal profile
BUT updates are not based on the OS it is 100% based on the manufacturer. And Onn is notorious (Walmart) for not providing proper support.
Walmart has created a CHEAP CHEAP tablet to compete with Fire tablets. And Walmart has their own bloatware installed on every Onn (currently not as bad as Amazon's).
You can not buy this tablet and expect any updates.
Lineageos is a must. Greater speed and latest Android.
you can find it around this price point. though it will be tricky. $80 or so is more typical.
