I'm not sure it's better than the base model at $450. You get 2 more cpu cores, 6 gpu/neural engine cores, 8gb ram and 256 more ssd space for 120% more cost.
Not saying this isn't a good price for this spec, but the base model @ $450 is tremendous value.
Yes, the M4 has 10 cores and the M4 Pro has 12 cores. So technically you're correct; 2 more cpu cores. But the M4 Pro has twice as many Performance cores.

M4 chip only has 4 Performance cores. M4 Pro has 8. And that makes a big difference in certain applications, like Logic Pro 11. As Shown Here [youtu.be]

I wanted to get the base model and didn't think paying an extra $400 for 24GB/512GB model was worth it. But now that this sale came up, $$550 more for 24GB/512GB w/M4 Pro chip, that changed my mind.

Might not be worth it for some folks but this is exactly the model I wanted and got it at a good price. Couldn't be happier.

Thanks. Picked one up with a price match at Best Buy. Going to sell my 14" M1 Pro MacBook Pro for $700 so net cost will be roughly $400. I don't travel enough to use it so this will be nice upgrade.

Is there a way around price matching if we aren't near a micro center?

I currently have a 16inch M2 pro 16GB/512GB, 65 cycle count and 98% battery. I will be able to get around 950 dollars from Apple Store as gift card which I can use to pay for apple services. I would like to purchase this Mac mini as a desktop option and a 15.3 inch M4 air or 14 inch M3pro/M4pro for portability. Do you think this is a good idea? My primary usage is lightweight coding and writing latex documents...sometimes I code in R or python which are high computing requirements...
I'll give you 1,100 for the computer

Just get a quality dock and save your money. I didn't think performance is something you need to worry about, and the portability of a MacBook air vs a 16" pro seems overblown to me. I've never been in a situation where a slightly smaller and lighter laptop made that much of a difference.

512gn is trash for video editing. I need at least 4tb. Using external sucks because it will never be as fast as the internal ssd and its less reliable.

512 is weak for most things but the OS/ You can get a USB4 or thunderbolt enclosure and a vastly cheaper PCI4 NVMe for peanuts compared to Apple and get 4-5 GB/sec (as I do). As to reliability, you can choose the TBW and it is not even published what Apple's longevity is (unlike a commercial one) so how can you even make that statement? Thirdly if it dies, you can replace it yourself not go to Mac repair and get a quote for 100% the cost of the device to fix it when it dies. Ask me how I know on my m2pro?

$100 more. IMHO 1 Gig is a joke, even a $100 mini PC has a 2.5Gig. Yet another Apple gimping their equipment scheme.
