I just bought the bare bone kit of this exact model three days ago for $318. installed 4tb nvme (2x tb Samsung 990 Evo +) and 32gb ddr5 5600 ram. it's awesome.you won't find any downside for those tasks,1. watching movies is no issue, the onboard graphics support 4k resolution with no issue, and mostly your video quality is dependent on your TV or monitor.2. office works on a potato, no issue here.3. retro gaming is excellent, you mentioned ps1 but I've tested Switch, PS3 and Xbox 360. all perform great due to the ryzen 7, as emulators are heavy CPU bound. steam and gamepass also works great, new AAA titles with FSR enabled, steady 1080p 60hz and above.honestly amazed at what this little box can do.

I don't understand the appeal of using occulink for an e-GPU with this whatsoever. it doesn't even make sense for pricing.

Could this replace a full size tower? I'm really out of touch with these mini PCs and their specs/capabilities. I mainly watch videos, use Office, and retro gaming (up to PS1). Any limitations in that regard?

Good to know as I am in the need of a new computer. Do you have a link to your barebone version?

Hmm, this or the Bosslink for a general-purpose kitchen PC:

$306 is quite the savings and supposedly very quiet... wondering if the performance increase of this is worth it. Have a Microcenter right on my way back from work.

Absolutely, the CPU side of things is 8 Zen 4 cores. The processing power is insane. The GPU gaming side of things is decent. It trades blow with a base GTX 1650, some games are faster with the 780m graphics on this, others are a little faster on the 1650.

I recently switch to using one of these as my main PC and it sips power. Any normal desktop tasks feel no different from my main gaming system that draws a bunch of power and dumps out heat.

This CPU is basically the same as the Z1 extreme which is more powerful than the Steam Deck. This can run modern games as long as you are fine running with low settings and possibly needng upscaling. If you play older games you can max them out without issue.

I'm very happy that I made the switch, and I'm much cooler in my office. My only issue with having extra money weighting my wallet down from the mini PC both using less power, and needing to run my AC a lot less this summer.

You can install either one, I had installed CachyOS on mine. No Linux drivers yet for the WiFi card in these, so if you want Bluetooth or Wifi you'll need to swap out the card (most people put an AX210 in these)

I think I answered my own question, even for those not gaming, the HDMI 2.1 likely makes the Minisforum a better deal for future-proofing.

Kind of depends on what you want to do with it - this one has a newer/faster processor, 780M iGPU vs the 680M in the Bosgame, also has 12GB more RAM. If you're not looking to play AAA games on it, either one would be fine. This one is a step up from the P3 lite, but if you aren't looking to play Assassins Creed in 4k, then the P3 should be fine.

Edit: just saw your comment, good catch about the HDMI. Also if it matters, the UM790 only has one HDMI and one DisplayPort.
