these would be effective for a job site or to keep a family connected at a carnival. I wouldn't use them in the wilderness due to the fixed antenna. They would make a good addition to an emergency kit if you program the radio with local fire, sheriff, usfs etc frequencies .

Don't expect great performance but there are a number of cases where having a pocketable radio is better than no radio.
