2 mile range sucks because you want 10-15 mile range to get 5 mile talking

Check out the baofeng mp31. Just as cheap as this set, like 12-15$ each. USB C charging, NOAA, repeater programming, no LCD and external buttons, CHIRP programmable. Only thing is it goes up to 3w only. But it's plenty for most uses
Thanks! I appreciate the reply. Where do you get your info about the MP31 being 3 watts? According to FCC ID: 2AJGM-MP31, (from amazon) it is 1.3w. The FRS RT22 is 1.08w.
Unless you meant the baofeng gmrs gm21. It is 3.7w. They are about $25 each. But has the full keypad on the front.

Fat fingered on mobile, should be 2 watts. Got the spec directly from baofeng.

Did you use the Chirp software to program it.
Yes, and I used a Baofend UV5R programming cable.

From what I read lots of people use FRS radios on cruise ships so even with the "privacy" tones there is a lot of interference.

A better option is the license free 800 Mhz spread spectrum encrypted radios where no one can listen into buy they are much more expensive.

Quote from ctsoh :
Yes, it would work, but almost all ships now search your luggage with scanners and xrays and when found, will be confiscated. If they catch you walking around using them, they will also confiscate them. I used them on Royal Caribbean, but never openly. Some ships will kick you off the ship if found or deny boarding if found. They are really looking for power strips, chargers, and anything electrical that could cause a fire, but will not overlook these when found.

I'm happy with the audio quality compared to the more expensive kids' model we bought long ago. Usbc, rechargeable battery and included chargers are added bonus for me.
The build quality may not be durable enough for drops.

I wonder if replacing the antenna, with the one pictured in the "frequently bought together", would boost it to 2w.

I have these to use at our small facility and we get cross talk often from road construction or kids talking on it, etc. Is there anything we can buy that will prevent all this cross talk? I've heard of MURS which sounds like its less congested but still have a chance of people being on the same five channels that it uses. Any suggestions for two way radios that are compact, doesn't need a subscription, more private, for business use.

Bought this set several years ago and they are great. Used on cruises and hunting mainly. Years old and still work great and hold a charge.

From the reviews, I think the range is actually accurate vs other radios. I'd take this over a "10-15" mile range no-name walkie talkie.

These numbers are all fictional. Maximum transmit power for FRS without license is 2 watts. As long as it has that and a decent antenna, you get to talk a decent distance. That said, these radios will probably not transmit farther than 5 miles under perfect line of sight conditions. Once you have obstacles in between, you'll be down to less than a mile quickly, and even less in or around buildings.

All you would really need to do is reprogram these with different PL tones so you don't get all that crosstalk. Pretty simple to do using the Chirp programming software.

MURS would work, but it would be the same concept (PL tone change) to avoid the same.

As many others have said you won't get two miles out of these. These are FRS radios. GMRS radios will get you about 1 mile. But with that being said, they're great for what they are. We use FRS and GMRS doing Hurricanes and they cover our Community with no problems.
