Walmart has the Greenworks 60V 54" Maximus (or MaximusZ?) Zero Turn Riding Mower with (2) 20.0 Ah, (2) 8.0 Ah & (2) 4.0 Ah Batteries and 1.5kW Charger model 7422302 or $4497. This is the best price I have seen this mower by over $1000. I.e. It's been on sale for $6498 direct from Greenworks and there is an available 15% coupon that brings it down to $5523.
https://www.walmart.com/ip/seort/2491178967

PROS
  • Suspension seat
  • Roll over protection
  • Built in LED lights
  • Front (powered) and rear hitches
  • 8 Mph travel/mowing speed
  • Fast blade tip speed supported by high torque motors (unlikely to bog down)
  • Integrated dump bed
CONS
  • Stated runtime is 85 minutes with included batteries, but this is likely under ideal conditions - can be upgraded by swapping out the two 4 Ah batteries with 8 Ah batteries and that might provide a 12% bump in runtime
  • Greenworks support is questionable (e.g. will they supply repair parts in 5 or 10 years?), and repair network is certainly not ubiquitous in the states
  • Calendar life of batteries unknown
  • Use manual states the mower should be stored at or above 32 deg F which may not be possible for those who store mower in unconditioned spaces in colder climates. Batteries can be removed and stored indoors.

I have the 82v "commercial" greenworks 42in. zero turn. I have had it for 3 years running (6) 6ah 82v batteries as well as (6) 4ah 80v. I live in northern OH. I store the batteries indoors when not in use and the mower in my garage (no hvac). I haven't had any issues with my machine or batteries. These machines seem to be very similar. I am considering upgrading to the 54". The only maintenance I've needed to do has been changing the blades and airing up/patching tires. I am very happy with my purchase so far.

Thanks for sharing your experience with a similar model. Could you comment on how the actual runtime of your mower compares with Greenworks advertised runtime?

Sure, the 6ah batteries last between 60 and 75 minutes of cutting on high settings. Just over half an acre. The 4ah lasts around d 45 to 55 minutes. Around .35 to .4 acres. These are batteries that have been used for 3 seasons of mowing for over 10 customers. I have always run the blades on high speed, and occasionally, I run the drive speed on high. If low settings are used, the run time is slightly longer.

This is a strange product for Greenworks with 60v batteries. Seems most people are in the 80v ecosystem. I know there's an 80v version of this. But it's strange that they even made a 60v version.

Not a knock on them. In fact, good for them to give customers choices instead of better forcing them into the more expensive 80v ecosystem! I'm just a little surprised, is all.

I don't have any experience with mechanical warranty support with them, but some with battery support. I had an 80v 2.5Ah battery go dead. I got to work with humans on the phone and they helped me troubleshoot. They sent me a new charger first to see if that fixed it. When it didn't, they shipped me a new battery and asked me to recycle the old one. No fuss other than the reasonable attempt with a new charger first (that I got to keep). That was my first Greenworks tool and I've owned a few since (just last fall I bought a two stage 80v snow blower). My ~8 year old leaf blower is still going strong. Not so much with their cheap snow thrower devices (electrical failures kept causing the 3 that I owned to fail to start up).

Just thought I'd share that warranty experience when I read that comment in the OP

Ours is in the shop right now. The only shop near us is 40 mins away and they ended up coming and picking up the unit because we wouldn't have had anyway to get it there easily. We are waiting to hear back on what the issue is but the shop seems to think we might just get a new unit sent out to us because it's not really fixable. It's about 3 years old or so. The shop we sent it to said they are just waiting as they are having some trouble getting in contact with greenworks to see how they want to proceed. Not much maintenance to do on them but if something does go wrong it's not like a gas engine where you can easily fix them yourself either.

I've heard things like that before. It sounds like you've got a good repair shop near you! Most shops don't give a F and won't help you out like that. Keep that in mind if you personally ever need a good repair shop for something!
